Solid Rod Durability?

Wondering about how 1 1/2" rod would stand up for use as control arms? Just for the shorter, front uppers, so not as worried about weight gain. I'm mostly wondering about how the thread strenght would hold up, drilled out 3/4" fine. Using tube stock for the longer lowers.

I dunno, should work ok. GM takes a solid rod, twists the snot out of it and calls it a 'torsion spring'.

I don't see why the threads wouldn't hold up as long as you made them deep enough.

my old man is an engineer, and has told me before that tubes are generally stronger than solid rod, in most applications. whether or not that is true for this application, i don't know.

What the heck does the operator of a train know about metal?

No, he's right. Tube generally IS stronger than solid stock.

I guess I'll just wind a leather strap handle on one and stick under the seat then...

Sure is, but it's run longer and better than any of the GM I've owned... and I come from a GM family.

the qualification for that is by weight... a 1-1/2" OD bar is stronger than a 1-1/2" OD tube. granted, the only difference is the difference in strength of ID of the tube.

I already bored and tapped them, but I'll get inserts anyway. Not worried about the rod bending, it's only plugging the square tube, about 2/3 of the tubes length and both plug and end welded in place.
