SK Canuck?

The wife and I are sort of thinking of heading up for some fishing during vacation this summer. I was wondering how far north you need to go to get into decent walley and pike during late July/early August? Are there any camps closer than La Ronge? Looking to rent a cabin, maybe a boat (if I can get mine sold before we go).

Thanks

Evan in CO

As a matter o' fact, Tobin Lake resort, and Codette lake are considered some of the finest Walleye and Pike fishing in North America. Just a few steps off my doorstep in Nipawin, SK. Not quite as far north as La Ronge (we're three hours south).

Have a poke around at www.nipawin.com . There are a few large tournaments each year that draw people in from around the world that you may be interested in...

Rod

Re:SK Canuck?

Tobin Lake grows some 16 lb + Walleyes. And don't forget, Nipawin has one of the finest golf courses in Sask. (which I'm finally going to play this summer.) A little north of Nipawin you can go for Laketrout around East Trout and Little Bear Lakes and head up the Hanson Lake Road to Jan and Deschambault Lakes. If your into Rainbow Trout fishing, Diefenbaker Lake quite often produces over 8 lb Rainbows and some pretty good walleye as well. The cabin/boat rental might be a problem though. Besnard Lake, south of La Ronge, is also a good walleye spot. If you can change your plans to come up in early to mid June, the walleye are just done spawning and are a lot hungrier. Might be a bit later this year because of the cold winter.

Re:SK Canuck?

Thanks guys, I would like to get up there earlier, but my plant has a shutdown in July/August and can't take off before then. Our walleyes start up about mid-May. Like going up into UP Michigan and Ontario, but we want to try something a little closer this year. The houseboats in Tobin are looking pretty good. Is that lake good for a canoe? We have an Old Town w/3hp gas motor, or would a little bigger boat be better? We also have a 21' cutty, but it's not the best fishing rig. I would probably just rent a small boat.

Thanks Again!

Re:SK Canuck?

Rod can give you better advice on the canoe as Tobin is a fair sized lake. I talked to an outfitter from there last weekend at the Sport & Leisure show. If I remember correctly, their boat rentals start at $65CAN/day and go up from there. They have guides as well to get you started on where to go. I think I have a brochure from them, I'll check when I go home tonight.

Drop an email to the tourist info booth (the email is on that nipawin.com website). They'll have much better info than I can supply. If you don't get any info back within a couple days, let me know, and I'll stop in the booth and bellar at them for a bit. All I remember is if the wind gets up, Tobin can go whitecaps in a hurry.

Rod

I'm lucky enough to get to do some "northern fishing" when I fly up to the minesites for work. They're a little farther north than you, one is just south of Lake Athabasca and the other mine is on Wollaston Lake. Just a little job perk. ;D

Wheezer,
I checked the brochures I picked up. The outfitter I talked to is Twin Marine. They're on the Nipawin Website.
