Anyone using one of those big shipping containers for a storage building? I'm needing some storage and this appears to be the cheapest most secure square footage. Any thoughts? What prices to expect?

Ya a company that I have worked for uses them for locker rooms. They weld two of them side by side and cut holes in them so you can access both containers.
They work real good you can also put a door on the side. I have also used one for a work shop with another company. It was wired for lights and 110 with a work bench in it.

we use them to store spare parts in at work. installed shelving and lights in them. a tip if you buy one is to remove all the door latches and leave only one on the door that you have to open first. makes it easier than having to latch and unlatch four latches every time you have to open it.

Call 'em a Connex up here. Work great. I tried to talk Mama into 2 of them and some trusses to go over them to make a quick garage. That was before we moved....

another tip, if you are going to compartmentalize them, and go side entry with doors..... mark the door opening, mark hinge locations, cut at each hinge a one foot long cut, weld door hinge in place, then finish cutting door out, this will keep the door in place instead of trying to locate/ weld hinges with a floppy piece of unmanageable steal. two of the units, side by side, ten feet apart can be converted to a nice dry center section later on with the addition of a roof between using 12 footers, some plywood, and then roll roofing.

We use them at work for lumber storage. We cut the whole side out with a plasma cutter and stack the containers on top of each other for a mock lumber yard.. Paid a little over 300 for them (we have 8 40ft)

Spend a few extra bucks and get the double door model with doors on each end. I think we pay about $2000 or so for once used (shipped one time).
A large window air conditioner will keep one tolerateable to work in. add some 1" square tubing and skin the inside and some AB foam insulation will help alot.

There are a lot of those up here aren't there....there was a guy a few years ago that deals in them, had a bunch of them with the reefers intact. if I had the time to check them out I would of had a nice meat room.

check with you building code enforcement, around here a "shed" cannot be over 200 square feet

a 20 ft container would be fine.

You might get a few complaints if you tried a life sized Jenga game out of them.

I'm going with a 40, the only restriction I have is I'm limited to 2 "outbuildings" or "carports". They didn't say how big ( or small ) as long as I don't violate my boundry restrictions.

I could put 2 - 40's under one common roof!

Not long ago China was exporting so much and containers were so cheap to build empty containers were not returned . Things change . Increased wages in China make building the containers more expensive and Americans have cut back on buying Chinese products .
Bottom line , the U.S. is exporting more and less containers are coming in , raising the price of containers .
