Service = Citizenship
Service = Citizenship
Any one ever see Star Ship Troopers? The wife and I and a couple friends have gotten into the the conversation about "americans", and it usually ends up with me saying this.
I really do believe that citizenship should only be offered after a term of military service. (not being forced into the service to keep from going to jail either
)I would defend this country in a heartbeat, however it is the inhabitants of the land that bug me at times. I have no problem serving my country, just I dont like all the "freeloaders" here
Dont get me wrong, I'm not 100% brehind the gubmint either, that place needs a good flushing also. To me it just seems that more than 50% of "US" would not stand up for our home land. That just erks me! I dont like the idea of so few good people putting their lives on the line, giving up time with the family, etc... to defend a bunch of ungrateful "citizens"

I have always identified with the way Hienlen saw the world aswell. I dont think it would be a bad idea to have a term of service (volentary) before being alowed to vote. Now for service, there is more then just the 5 you think of first; USCG, USMC, USA, USN, USAF. There is also the America Corps (kinda like the Peace Corps, only for America). Do some time in any of those for 2-4 years and then you are truely a citizen.
I'm not sure if I want Jesus (heyzus) operating the stealth bomber.
I'll take it one step further.......
I would like to see this country actaully make the people on public assistance work too. Digging ditches might make one re-think thier position in society.
Take some of these folks on welfare and make them do the jobs all the illegals are doing. Really it should be the same with Jail, if you play you gotta pay. I don't see anything wrong with these inmates being productive (not just license plates). Taking into consideration that we are an "all consuming, non-producing" counrty at this point, as a society we could use some good old fashion cheap- manual labor.

BRING BACK THE W.P.A. ! (look it up)
I agree with you guys! It really ticks me off when I see these protestors out doing what they do. There too stoopid to realize that the only reason that they can do it is because of our troops and what is done to ensure, protect our freedom and rights! Maybe protestors should be encarcarated for treason or crimes against the state like in other countries!

You're missing the point of serving to begin with. Not only are you defending your country, but you are also defending the ideals that this country was established with. Regardless of whether you agree with someone or not, it is their right to do so and I'd do another 20 years to preserve that freedom.

I got to thinking and after some more recent discussions with newer friends (the wife always gets to here me ummm complain about this), we agreed that we would defend the country, the people here, and for what it stands. Just that more people should earn their keep here, bad analogy is a hitchhicker not offereing any gas money, even though you decided to stop and give him a ride.......I've never been good at self expression through keyboards and hand gestures are to hard to use when ur typing

Same goes with the ones in jail. Things need to go back the way they were when they had the "Chain Gangs". Put them to work, instead of letting them sit in their cells while our wallets are getting lighter.
plenty more people would be joining the service right now if it was a war they believed in. most of those who aren't joining believe Iraq wasn't a threat to the US, therefor no reason to go to war. at least that's my theory for the low enlistment #'s.

The way I understand it, your stating that a "legal imagrant", (who in most cases went through years of hardships to get a Visa, and be able to "legally" move and become a naturalized citizen in this country), must serve in our military, in order to become a citizen?
I have a hard time agreeing with that. I hate to sound like a lefty, but in my opinion thats wrong. I think if your going to have one party do it everyone should. You speak of "freeloaders", I know of plenty "freeloaders" who are born and raised in this country, have generations of family in this country that wont get off there lazy butts to get a job, let alone join the military. Or better yet, they would much rather, work for 3 months, get there butts fired and collect unemployment for the next 9.
Serving in the Military is a choise, it should stay that way. I graduated highschool early @ 17, to join the ARMY, I did this of my own free will, for 8 years, BTW, My family imigrated here in 82, I was six. They all have jobs & pay taxes. I also served with plenty of Koreans, Pakistanis, Mexicans etc. Many of which were imagrants themsevles, granted some did it for the education, some didnt. The point is I have'nt met to many that did it because they had to. Trust me, the last guy I would want next to me in a foxhole is some guy that was forced to be there.
Instead of forcing service in our military for citizinship, lets consentrate on closing our borders to illegals, and the loser citizens of this country that feed off our tax dollars everyday, because there to busy having twelve kids, living off foodstamps while they drive there new Caddy's with there new 20's, drinkin 40's before 10am 7 days a week.
Focus on the people screwing this country up from within, not the ones trying to make a better life for there families by imigrating.
You missed an important point. In Starship Troopers, and this conversation, EVERYBODY must serve in some capacity before being granted the right to vote. Not just people immigrating in, but people born here too. The gist of it is, if you want the privelege of helping to decide how the country is run, you must first serve your country. Not serving results in not being a "full" citizen.
