There can be residents here and then citizens. The ideas that formed this country many years ago were a great idea, but as with any great idea that comes along it gets infected by the millions. This country is not ran based on our constitution anymore, and therefore this country needs a good spring cleaning and reorganization. I agree the Service should be all voluntary. (anyone remeber the accronym for N.A.V.Y. ?) However, I had shipmates that were court ordered to serve or it was jail time. The Military SHOULD NOT be a means of punishment. It should be an honor to serve, and for most of us it was. They screwed up off to jail they go. I believe that a person should "earn" a lot of the freedoms of this country. If a person earns it they more than likely will not take them for granted as soo many people do. After Sept 11, there were flags everywhere. What happened?? Its not cool to show patriotism anymore? I sadly think this country is slowly going downhill. Like said we should go back to or become more of a self sustaining world power.

I think it'd be great if more people would serve in some aspect, be it the military or the peace corps or something. but making the military mandatory would be no good in my opinion. that'd just put a bunch of dam fools out in the field. my brothers are both air force officers, my dad served navy, my bro-in law is a police officer, i know none of them would want to be serving in a life/death matter next to someone that was forced to be there.
I'd love to be able to serve but between my asthma, migraines and broken femur pretty much no one wants me. So I work hard full time and pay my taxes to write the paychecks of our military.
The thing that REALLY ERKS me is when people, regardless of political views, don't appreciate the lives people have laid down in our history, the families that have been torn appart, the children that have grown up with no dads, so that we can have the freedoms that we do. It's hard to force someone to appreciate something that they've been given with no cost to themselves.

my favorite cummins Smokin' incident involved a group of war protestors standing on a major street corner in fresno. I know it didn't make any sort of progress but dang it entertained me, it was all I could do to keep my truck pointed straight down my lane!
