School on 9-11...what to do...
Ok well we have school Monday on 9-11....We took the day off the last 4 years(as a family) but being one of the two students that does color guard...i was thinking about going to ensure the flag was flown at half mass.. I plan on standing in a moment of silence during the times the planes hit and the buildings collapsed.. Im not sure our school will make a point on reconizing the day, but the reconazation that 343 brothers of the FD died that day along with 3000 other US Citizens os kinda important to me.....Now besides flying the flag at half mass and takeing a moment of silence at the times of tragedy, What else can i do?
Any idea? fellow firefighteres? military?
Thanx Mike

Send a care package to a troop in the desert. When I was in Iraq, one of the things that kept the morale up was knowing that there were still people back in the states that appreciated what we were doing. There are guys and gals dying there to keep the terrorists at bay and prevent another 9/11 from happening. Everytime I started to woner why I was there, I remembered that if we don't do the fighting over there, we'll be doing the fighting in the states. Those morale/care packages mean alot. Even a small box of cookies and a thank you note is VERY appreciated. A few of my troops there didn't have any family sending them anything in the mail, so all they would get in the mail is stuff from folks back in the states. I know they appreciated it.
What you are doing is great! I wish there were more young folks like you!

Agree with Ed and CTDinMT. Don't let the terrorists "win" by living in fear and send a care package to a troop. I am kind of partial to sending one to sailors (because I have been on the receiving end of those packages and can't tell you how much they boost moral. Even if it is just a letter)

Good job Iker, I'm proud of you.
What you do this 9/11 is important, but it is also what you do 5, 10, 20 years from now. Every year do the same thing.
We must NEVER forget what happened that day. You honoring the fallen will help preserve the event for everyone to ponder & reflect.

Contact your local USO and see if you can volunteer to spend a day asembling "Care Packages" to send to the troops.
I've done it before, it's fun, and a great feeling to know a soldier in the sandbox will be getting a package of goodies from "home" that you helped put together.

just kidding blue.Iker, you still suprise me with your mature thinking. Too bad people your age and older don't think like you.
Way to go Mike, you again show wisdom beyond your years and I applaud you for it. The biggest issue we face is that people forget why we are at war because of the negative political spin that gets put upon it.
By taking time to reflect you are also forcing others to remember and THAT is what we all need to do. As long as we remember we stay focused and we can beat this enemy, thank you for helping to achieve that goal.

Awesome Mike! Keep up the good work! I hope your school honors at least a moment of silence... I went to the Oklahoma City bombing memorial last saturday and it is still really hard to keep down the emotions... Things like this should be remembered forever...
