There's a clover leaf onramp from freeway to freeway right close to work.
Too many nights I've seen the freeway closed due to an 18 wheeler not slowing down enough to safely turn that sharp.

65mph to 20mph back to 65mph.

A couple of times I've seen one get within a degree of that magic incline with me right to the side of it.

Very glad my truck has some acceleration.

phox

Re:Saw an 18 wheeler VERY nearly lose it!

I just last evening saw a chip truck coming out of one of the plants in Hopewell with the inside tires up off the ground and stopped turning. I slowed down and pulled over because I just knew I was going to have to call 911 for help. Something kept it going and got the wheels back down on the ground and I don't know what. The center of gravity on those chip trailers is ridiculous anyway. I don't think the goober driving even knew it, he just kept hammering on it.

One time heading south on I-25 south of Denver, I just happened to look up at an overpass to see an 18 wheeler that was jack knifed coming through the barrier and the trailer had a load of pipe coming off of it down onto the Interstate.
The tractor and trailer stopped on the edge of the overpass while lengths of pipe slid off randomly. Several of us just made it under that bridge. Listening on the CB...nobody was hit by the pipes. I never did find out why the rig crashed.

Probably a rogue herd of sheep that escaped the clutches of the Sheep Boys.

Re:Saw an 18 wheeler VERY nearly lose it!

Saw one jack knife already. Didnt bother me much as the motion is predictable as long as the entire assembly remains together.

If hte load shifts or is lost then you have chaos.

------

Only other strange thing i have seen happen.

On a dark night I was entering the interstate and was looking down highway scoping for traffic. I see two semis passing one another. The one in the far/passing lane caught my eye as a rooster tail of sparks were flying skyward and backward from the trailer. AS they past me I was amazed by the fireworks from what was metal against metal griding on the rear axle. Then about 250' in front of me the entire hub including both duals left the trailers rearmost driver side axle. IT proceeded to bounce about 5 times in the same land of traffic and then bounced the median barrier into oncoming traffic. Of imporance is we were all on a four lane bridge (two each way and as with most 1950's bridges little or no pull off lanes). The wheel bouned in the oncoming lanes. Flattened the hood and engine of a 74 or 75 chevy impala, bounced a few more times and then off the other side of the bridge into the valley.

Amazing no one was hurt. Even the impala seemed to keep going after the hood and engine were pancaked.

------------------

On a flatbed truck, the guy was flying along on four lane switch back mountain road. He had no load but left the 4x4 or 6x6's that supported the load on the trailer without achoring them or tying them off. I was proceeding down the hill and noticed a car sitting on the shoulder with a 4x4 sticking out of the grill. and I kept giong. Then saw one on the highway. Then came into eyeshot was the truck with a car trying to pass it. The board flew off the truck and right through the windshield and rear window glass of the passing car. Not a good situation as that could certainly impale a person.

---------------

On me and golf *****.

Girlie and I were goingn to lunch passing a golf course. When all of a sudden "smack" and the intererior was full of a white dust. WE pulled over. She was full of little shards of glass about 1/32" in diameter and 1/4" long, effectively a pin cushin. I saw some Goofer scouring the trees and threw him the ball that was almost through the windshield. He said "thanks". I proceeded to ask him for homeowners insurance foe the bill to repair the car and take my GF to the hospital. He said no. Talked to a lawyer and if the person Goofing doesnt own up to the blal the course is responsible. NEecless to say it was all settled the same day.

On really windy days you can tell which semis are running empty by watching them come out from under the overpasses on I-35.

As soon as they get out into the strong wind it hits the side of the trailer and picks the tires on the windward side about a foot off the ground moves the trailer over a little bit, and then sets it back down again.

Oh yeah!

The boards flying off the trailer deal is familiar too!

A truck for a steel company where we buy steel was headed up the 610 bridge over the Houston Ship Channel and a 4x4 came sliding and bouncing off the truck. We were two lanes over and in no danger. But we called our contact at the company and reported him.

Not sure anything came of it....

Re:Saw an 18 wheeler VERY nearly lose it!

when i hauled cattle the way home some days was real windy in the wintertime, and the cattle trailers ar notorious for being real tippsy in a strong wind with all the punchside holes in them well, after you see your trailer tires come off the ground you knew it was time to back off about 5- 10 mph.... one time about 6 of us bullracks loaded up with 5-600 lb feedercattle in Osage Iowa and was headed to St. paul to the stockyards, well, I was the second to the last one and the fella in front of me was filling in for a different driver. He had no clue as to where we were going or the roads we were taking,
BECAUSE WE ALWAYS RUN THE LEGAL WIEGHT LIMITS!!!!
;D ;D :but, anyhow, we were all going like a bat out of hell when we come to an s- curve, that we all Knew about except 1- guy,,,, the guy in front of me!! He just started to hit the brakes when he went into the curve and i swear to god all the tires on one side of his trailer where in the air!! I was on the binders because i thought i was gonna be part of it to if he fliped it over.!! It almost kindof looked like a kid on a bike for the first time, but haveing his training wheels catch him! some how he pulled out of it, and eventually i passed him because i didnt like following him anymore! Needless to say, he was the last one to get to the stockyards-- about 45 minutes behind!!! :-X[glow=red, 2, 300]I think he had to change his hanes!!![/glow]

Re:Saw an 18 wheeler VERY nearly lose it!

I've personally seen it happen twice on the old curve between I15 south bound to I80 east bound in SLC before the I15 reconstruction.

First time, the rig went on over, and slid on its side for about a hundred feet. The trailer was a refer with the diesel powered cooler still running. Was making gobs of smoke before they finally got it shut off.

Second time, the driver almost lost it twice when the wheels on the inside curve were at least a foot off the ground, came back down, then went up in the air again.

Re:Saw an 18 wheeler VERY nearly lose it!

First 18 wheeler I ever saw with air under the tires-wife and I were travelling I 95 and a lady's hood blew up blinding her. She immediately jumped on the brakes the truck behind her swerved into the hammer lane as she stopped in the slow lane. His trailer musta been empty he almost went over but it came back down. I was behind the rig and passed her on the shoulder as the left lane had traffic. The truck driver stopped up the road I stopped behind him. He got outa the truck, white as a ghost, and shaking. We made sure the lady was okay, she had move the car over, and we both went on our way chatting on the CB for quite a while. He said it really scared the crap outa him. Swerving he saved that lady's life.

When I was in highschool part time work was for a moving co. About the second trip out driver jack knifed it on busy road. Was glare ice, he was inexperienced, and when it started to slide he froze. Thinking back I think he coulda saved it but again he was inexperienced. That sight of the trailer comin around..........Smoked about 10 cigarettes in a row waiting for the cops. Looked for a new job next week....
Re:Saw an 18 wheeler VERY nearly lose it!

Dad owns about 20 trucks and does alot of local hauling and mostly contract stuff out west. Had one driver, well experienced and been with dad for about 15 years, pick up a 48' flatbed with a load of lumber from the local yard. It was their trailer, he checked about everything when he hooked up but forgot to check the sliders on the trailer. He got about 35 miles and was going down a steep and curvy stretch of NC 18, (the one in Black Dog). And had to jam on the brakes pretty hard, because a car had pulled out in front of him. The trailer brakes were adjusted tight and when they locked they slid out from under trailer, then into curve truck and trailer tipped onto left side and slid about 300 ft. :'( We still have the truck, robbing parts mostly, but it was a mess.

Well here in the Philadelphia area 20 some inches of snow+big rigs and trailers+highways+speeds of 65mph plus= lawsuit.

I am waiting to have a chunk of ice come crashing through my windshield form the tops of their trailers. It is amazing that noone has gotten killed yet from this. One came crashing into the side of my work van as I passed one the other day. I am surprised DOT doesn't enforce this on the highways somehow. Anyone else come across this one.

Traler came clear off and across 4 lanes of roadway. About 1/2 mile in front of me.

Re:Saw an 18 wheeler VERY nearly lose it!

many years ago (about 20), I was headed down I-5 in a remote area between Stockton and the Grapevine when I was passed by a Lincoln Continental that must have been doing 120 mph.

The car almost disappeared from the horizon when all of a sudden I saw brake lights and a lot of dust and dirt.

When I arrived on the scene, evidently an 18 wheeler had lost a spare tire and wheel in the fast lane and the Lincoln hit it and went out of control and flipped, killing one and injuring the rest.

It was not a pretty sight and it did put a damper on my trip to Pismo

big jake
