Hey Fellers, I'm looking for a gun safe. 16 capacity with shelves for pistols and ammo. I'm about ready to buy a Stack On electronic safe from Wally World that seems to fit my needs and budget. $400.00 after delivery fee to my local store. Input from someone that owns one would be great, or maybe other options? Of course pics and specs from other safes would help. Thanks

Always buy a safe that is one size bigger than you think you need.
I have a Cannon 64 that I bought second hand. Its full but we store some other stuff in it besides guns.
Only problem is that it weighs 950 lbs empty.
When we went to pick it up from the lady who owned it we couldn't budge it. She repeatedly told us it wasn't bolted down.
Turned out it was

About that "stack-on",you realize it can be opened up with a p-38 don't you?I do not feel comfortable unless the safe weighs at least 500lbs,is bolted to a concrete block under the house,is located against an outside wall in a closet, and has a anti-tamper device (like a gas release) attached to it.Oh and check the length of time of the fire rating/inside temperature rise if involved in a fire. And as THE SHREWKEEPER said, buy more that you think you will ever need. Why you ask........for the same reasons you use safety wire.
A high quality fire proof safe can be worth it's weight in gold if you have collectible firearms. I often turn away customers who bring in fire damaged firearms they want re-blued and repaired because once they have been through a fire they are no longer safe to shoot.
Metal composition alters after it reaches high enough temperatures that can leave a chamber too weak to withstand the high pressures of modern cartridges.
I suppose there are some Gunsmiths out there that will work on them but I refuse to clean one up I know may possibly kill or blind someone when it explodes.
I had one customer that brought me 18 old weapons many were his Great Grand Daddy's that obviously had been through too much heat in a house fire when they were locked in a safe he thought would protect them......He was NOT happy with me when I told him they were nothing more than wall hangers now. He had a hard time understanding that even though his Insurance company was willing to pay to restore them, I could not guarantee there safety once I did because of the properties of the metals involved.
That stack on you are talking about is a good safe if you are trying to keep them out of your children's hands beyond that any determined thief will be in it quicker than you can cycle the grid heaters on your truck.

Mine's a Granite. More than I wanted to spend at the time, but glad I got it.
Lotsa good advice above.
Be sure to bolt it down to secure it and to keep it from tipping over when the door is open.
Some thieves wll try to steal the whole thing and then cut the top off of it in another location....
A friend of mine in MT built angle iron into his foundation and then had his safes (saves?) welded to them. Overkill? Maybe. Lost any of his stuff? No.

I have a very old safe with the Sargent and Greenlee lock on it..fireproof concrete lined with tear gas system that I bought for 250.00 used...Dang thing must weigh 1500 lbs!
Took 4 of us with 4x4s and fulcrums to topple it into the back of a F250..that truck NEVER squatted like that before. We drug it out with a tractor and chain and managed to get it on it's wheels.
Thieves tried to break into it with a sledge and beat on it till they ran out of gas and left it has a few dents that's it. One of these days I will break out the grinder and some bondo and then paint her up pretty...it stands in the garage waiting for anyone that feels man enough to try it hahahaha
The best safe is the one NO ONE knows you have
conceal it and keep it a secret if you can

Hey Guys, thanks for the advice. I ditched the Wally World safe in favor of a Cannon "Challenger" 24 capacity (for us guys with small guns)
Looks like 10-15 realistically. It's fire proof to 1200 degrees for 30 minutes. I got it at Tractor Supply. Really nice for the money. While I was in Red Bluff (30 miles from my town) I spotted a gun show going on at the fairgrounds so I thought I'd check it out to see how far I'd have to bend over for ammo.... If there was any. I picked up 200 rds of 9mm for $70.00
I hate to say that's not bad right now as my range charges $25.00 for 50 reloads!! Thanks again

Like Top said. If at all possible hide it. Even better is to hide it and have a decoy.
Its amazing how easy it is to put a false back on a closet, the unused area under stairs or some such thing.
In your area you could probably even get away with putting it inside against an outside wall.
Up here we get too much condensation to risk an outside wall.
