PS3 Hookup Question (need a guru's help)

Short: If I am using the HDMI output of the PS3, does it turn off the optical output?

Long: I am about to buy a PS3 and want to hook it up to a new TV using the HDMI output. I want to connect the HDMI cable directly to the TV, as my A/V receiver does not switch HDMI. I know the HDMI is audio and video, but I just want to use it for the video part. I want to use the audio optical output of the PS3 for audio (and run it into the optical in of my A/V receiver so I get 5.1 surround).

No, it should work as you plan just fine.

I have multiple HDMI components hooked up this way, using digital audio from each to my 5.1 receiver (through a toslink switcher so I don't have to keep swapping cables).

The PS3 gives separate setups for audio settings and video settings. I'm running component video (with a crappy 24" SDTV) and optical audio. You should have no trouble.

What games are you planning on getting? When you get the PS3, add me; my ID is potato_chip

Thanks ya'll.

Tom,
I plan on getting the Motor Storm edition of PS3, so I will have that game and then I am getting the new Call of Duty.

You won't regret it! If your TV has an optical out, just use that.

Most TV's, the optical out is only connected to the TV's internal tuner, it won't pass audio coming in.

Got a Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD that has one of it's HDMI inputs specifically for gaming (120 hz refresh rate) and the 80G PS3. Very happy with everything so far. Using HDMI cable straight to tv for video and an optical cable to the A/V receiver for audio. Movie and games are in 5.1 surround.
Can't wait until Monday when Dish Network comes out to replace my satellite receiver with an HD satellite receiver.
I can forsee the imprint of my backside on my couch getting bigger

One thing I found out: I suck at modern video games. I can't get the hang of 54 buttons and multiple joysticks. I grew up on Atari 2600. Give me one fire button and an 8 direction joystick and I kick behind.
