Places to live in LA?
Hey guys, next fall I'm going to be going to be transferring to CSULA. But, I've heard the school is in a bad area. So I am trying to figure out where a reasonable place to live might be? I would like to be within 30 mins of the school. If you live in or around LA I would really appreciate some ideas on where sone nice areas are to live...Obviously I would be renting...

Are you talking 30 minutes of drive time? Good luck dude - depending on the time of day, that could get you 5 blocks...
I have the best suggestion of all: don't go - find another college. I'm an ex citizen of the People's Socialist Republic of Kalifornia, and I don't regret leaving there at all. There's much better places to live/work/study in this country.

Well I won't be changing schools so thanks for the encouraging words. CSULA is the only school in this state that offers a BS in fire science administration and technology. It's an excellent program and there are many cadet programs that run hand and hand with the fire department. I figured I wouldn't get much help here. Thanks guys.

I'm not positive but I think that CSULA is located near San Gabriel Valley which is by far not the worse area In LA. If you can afford it San Marino would be great. If not Monrovia, Alhambra, or Arcadia are decent. LA is LA but that isn't the worse part by far.

Thanks for the imput! I will look into those areas for sure. I'm going to head down there around X-MAS and I do have family in Orange County but they don't seem to know much about LA, so I want to have some areas in mind to look at when I head down there myself.

You won't make chief any faster with a BS in fire science admin as opposed to an AS in fire tech and a BA in public admin. Either way, you'll be hard pressed to get a job with anybody besides CDF unless you're a medic....

Go to a community college and get your A.S. degree in fire tech. Then tranfer to a university and complete your Bachelors in Public Admin. Then spend a year in medic school so you can get a job.

Thank you for your imput. The reason I am going this route is because this is where my interest is at the moment. It would be easy for me to apply to another state school for a more common degree, such as a business admin degree, but the course work is not as interesting to me. Also that particular school has cadet programs as a part of the program that hooks you up with one of many departments in the LA area...both public and private.
BTW, I will be finishing up my AS in Fire science and my FF1 cert this spring and will be transferring after that point...I'm already an EMT.
I will also be applying to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo because there is another degree program there for a BS in Urban Forestry with a focus in fire and fuel management. Because like you said the fire department isn't as interested in the type of BS degree that you have obtained, they just want to see that you have one. So for me and the other friends and family in the fire department that I've been talking to, it only makes sense to go after a degree that is of interest to me.
After school and some more work as an EMT I will enter medic school. One other thing, there are more openings in departments then you would think for EMT's. More and more departments are looking for medics because of the advanced lifecare they can offer in the field. But many departments either dont have, or dont want to pay the extra money for Medics. If you have ever been involved in the fire service you would agree with me that at the end of the day, it all comes down to money. These are the observations of friends and my family in the fire service. Along with the imput of several bay area BC's and Chiefs.

Yeah I am outside of California and proud of it.
I was born and raised in LA county (Montebello) in a city bordering East LA.
I left in 96/97.
LA is a craphole.
I usually travel back there once or twice a year to visit family.

Yea I was born and rasied in Northern California along the coast and love it. My dad would agree with you about LA being crap. He grew up there and says he would never move back. I'm not planning on staying there...just for school.
