Pilots and Density Altitude

It appears that we have a local fatality caused by disregarding the density altitude.

A Piper 38 took off from a nearby field today. First report shows full fuel load and one soul on board. Never cleared the high tension lines surrounding 3 sides of the runway.

What worked in May may not work in June. Check your POH and Wx.

The Tommy, while popular was never a great performer to start with. Out of curiosity, any idea how long the field is that he was using?

We called them tramahawks. Plane voted most likely to kill a student. Recently one of our pilots couldn't figure out why his Caravan wouldn't make power. Duh! Redding, CA and over 100°. Their solution was to put a sea plane prop on it.

We all remember the video of the guy with the plane full of passengers that goes down in the woods after struggling for what seemed like miles to get off the ground.

DA is real, needs to be understood and adjusted for.

Carb ice seems to be another mystery to most fair weather flyers.

5,000 feet should have enough even for that anemic engine. Bet he did an intersection take off.
