I bought on of the old Police Interceptors quite a few years ago. It was the big Fury with the 440 in it. Man that thing would move.

I should have it cleaned up and running this weekend.
Don't get too thrilled . You can fool the 4 wheelers but word is quickly passed on the CB that the Crown Vic is not a "wrapper " , just a wannabe .

Go through everything on the brakes! Have an emergency fund for the tranny and rear. Sometimes your lucky and it was jsut replaced before the vehicle got to the mileage cut-off. The rest will be needing it. And YES, be very aware of other drivers, they will be startled and lock up brakes or swerve out of nowhere.

These tests were on 2006 vehicles but a recent article in "Car & Driver" gave almost similar results . http://www.allpar.com/squads/police-...e-testing.html .
The Charger V-6 is equal to the Ford V-8 and the Hemi just flat runs away from everything .

It was $1500 at our City auction. I need a commuter car for work and have had my eyes on these. I need to take all the residual stickers off. Debage times 100. I will send some after pics when I'm done.
They are great cars, and they can take a beating too. I would suggest that you do what you can to make it "un-police" that car as much as possible. If not, you might find yourself getting some extra attention from the real police.

Redleg, funny you say that.I wanted a "real" 4-door sedan, something simple...turns,stops,holds 6 well,5 souls anyway. So this '96 9c1 winds up in my possession.I thought it felt a little ....umm 'funny' on occassion, but what what the heck it did have 145+ on the odo.I let a friend of mine park it,and he comes back to me with an odd look on his face.'Seems when he parked the car he turned the steering wheel and it never stopped! The next day there was a brand-new steering box in that sucker.I guess they hit one too many speed bumps. Now if I could only get that 5.7 above 19 mpg

Fun for probably about the first 30 minutes of driving seeing everyone move.. But like Jack says youll probably get more attention from the ones with the lights and box that goes woo woo woo.

I took all the residual stickers off and sanded the sides down where they cut into the paint trying to remove the rest. I then put some primer on it and am going to have it re-painted.

The push bumper, and passenger spot light are coming off. I'll see how it goes with the drivers side one and if it's bad then I will take that off and pick up a new front grill that's not black and get the white rear piece that goes around the license plate. Then I'll look like a 65 year old retiree!!!

For what I paid for this car and it's purpose being for commuting I'm thrilled. I don't plan on driving like an idiot so I'm not concerned about the real police.

The tranny seems to be good and the engine sounds good. I met a guy yesterday who has a engine and tranny out of a 2001 that was rear ended and said he'd sell me both for
$700. My hope is that I won't need to do that. I know that every cab is one of these cars so they must do ok.

I never had any trouble like that with my Cop-price. It still had the push bars and the spotlights. It was plain white, no stickers. I owned that car for 4 years, ran it hard (buried the 125 mph speedo a couple times - last year for a carburetor ), and never got pulled over in it once. I loved that car, but it just got too rusty.

Looks good so far as I can tell from the pictures. It should give you good worry free service once you get it done. They do run forever, and they can take a beating. I noticed what appeared to be a very dark window tint in the back that's in kind of bad condition. Is that correct? I noticed it because the only cop cars I see on the road with that kind of tint are usually K9 vehicles. Did this car have a cage in it or anything like that? If not, are there holes on the roof near the front seat belt area? The only reason I know about the window tint is because I drive a 2001 myself as a rescue vehicle. It's got a K9 cage in it and almost blacked out rear windows. Nice for the dog, sometimes bad when backing.

You are correct about the rear tint being in bad shape. The tint is bad all around and pretty dark.

There were a total of four k-9 units at the auction and they all had the flat rear seat area with tons of dog hair. This one had the normal rear seat and from what I can tell no signs of a dog.

The stickers on this one looked a little different from the rest of the city cars in that they didn't have as many. All the other cars had stickers on the front fenders all the way back and this one only had them on the doors back. Not sure about it's history as they really don't help out much with that part.

It doesn't look like it ever had a cage in it, but there is still a wire coming through the roof on the drivers side. I need to pull that out and also pull the other 2 antennas. I'm assuming it was for the light bar?

I put a new fuel pump in it and have only driven it for a few miles. I want to finish everything before it becomes the daily commuter.

Now I need to work on the inside which is filthy. Thanks for the info.

The Crown VIc's handle really nice.. but they are slow as heck out of the hole.. Make alot of noise like they are going fast...

Best car I think we had was the Chevy Caprices with the LT1 motors in them.. they were rockets.. Had one up to 142 (digital speedo) with a full light bar....

If you look in the background of my pictures you will see several Caprices. I have a buddy who has a shop and next to it is a whole bunch of em. The owner has a 94 or 95 LT1 and he let me take it for a drive yesterday. It's in great shape and hauls butt. I got on the freeway and he told me to hit it. I went back into my seat. Nice car, but he said he's lucky if he gets 12-13mpg.

My Crown Vic purchase was for a 4 door car that was inexpensive and would last a while. I'm past the first part, now we'll see how long it lasts!!

If the LT1 is there next time I'll take a picture. It looks brand new.

I've got a 1996 Impala SS with the LT1, and for a 4200 pound car it'll move. I bought the car at a farm equipment auction for $6200 with 49,000 original miles. The car was/is in great shape, it just needed a good cleaning. I thought it was a good deal, because KBB valued it at about $13,000. My girlfriend has smoked a couple GT Mustangs with it.
