we live between two state parks and have to answer special calls to both (rope rescue, swift water rescue/recovery). ummmmm, if you know the area- leash your dog from danger. if you DON'T know the area, leash your dog for protection.
I actually got to witness a family come to a very scenic public parking (big)spot with the grandoise view of letchworth state park (grand canyon of the East in New York) let the family happy pet out of the car, and let it run to the calling family near the knee high rock wall with open iron pole railing. yup, explain your stupidity to little billy and janie......900 feet straight down and mighty dogs have not learned how to fly.
love my sled dogs. 15 year old malamute went with me to wander in the woods. black bear wandered in too,15 year old hips could not get on the 4X4. 15 year old eyes may not have seen that it was me that grabbed the dog to lift him up on the four wheeler. when i came to, in the creek bed 10 feet away, I had a crushed (rear process)skull. from the malamute, the bear ran.
animals are okay in the wild, we are the idiots.

Don, had my motorcycle crash in sept of 98. flight was free, they thought I was dead in flight and went to ALT site. hello?! fast flight to surgery. a free flight and I couldn't even enjoy it......

You know.... I couldn't have said it better myself! This coming from someone that has had to rescue a dog off the side of a cliff. It is nothing but publicity. I like dogs as much as the next guy but I will always save a human before an animal. Sorry guys jmho. We get sent out all the time on a cat in a tree. I will NEVER rescue a cat out of a tree. I will not put my crew in danger to rescue some animal that will eventually find it's way back down. You have never seen a cats skeleton in a tree and you never will.
