"PET" peave!

Fox news showing a dog rescue right now. It was down a 200 ft ravine. They are useing a helicoptor! Believe me, I love my dog like nothing else, but come on. Not only are you jeopardizing a human down the ravine, as well as a helicoptor crew around the woods, but imagine the cost! When I had my motorcycle crash in 98, it was $4500 to get the bird in the air and double that with mileage. Also consider the crew is now temprarily out of service for a REAL emergency, with a man dangling below while holding a dog, and when it goes to refill and check equipment. I hope the owner gets a bill, plus a citation for a loose animal. It might be nice in a childrens book, but it's not "cute" to me.

What's worse is if the dog gets hurt during the rescue then PETA and every other scum will be suing the rescuers and helicopter companies for wrongdoing. But, if they don't attempt to rescue fido then someone is going to get sued too. Darn if you do darn if you don't.

that makes about as much sense as someone spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to keep an ailing dog alive. I love my dog but there is no way id make that kinda fuss.

other than our universal love of our dogs, there are actually a couple of reasons that this is done. the first one is that it is horrible p.r. for the fire dept. to say "sorry, we're gonna let your dog suffer and die", and the second is that there's a good chance that the dog owner and other civilians will then attempt to rescue the dog themselves, risking their own lives, and creating an even bigger, more dangerous situation, with all of them needing to be rescued.

I'm sure the helicopter is overkill...they could probably do it with less extremes.
BUT
I spent about 2K trying to save our Great Dane from what turned out to be kidney failure. She was a member of the family and finally putting her down made me feel like a bad parent. It was like putting down one of my kids.
I know I wasted a heck of alot of cash but I'd do it again if I thought there was the slightest chance.
20 yrs ago I would have taken her out and shot her in the head once she got that bad. I guess age has made me soft...I just can't anymore.
I have an English coon hound now and she's just as pitiful as the dane! I can see a massive vet bill when she gets old!

That's a good point. Fortunately here though, we recently passed legislation that if somebody's "adventure" is considered careless or wreckless, they will foot the bill of the rescue. It was mostly inspired by boaters and ice fishermen, constantly putting themselves in a bad situation, but should apply to somebody chaseing down their loose animal too.

Ron, I have no problem with you spending whatever you wish on your property, it's your money. The vet isn't in a life threatening situation, like the helicoptor crew.

No, it's much worse that that. Talk show host Dennis Prager has a morality quiz he gives to see how messed up a person is. It's one question: "If a person you don't know and a dog you do know were both drowning and you could save only ONE, which would it be?"
Yeah, people get it wrong all the time. "I'd save the dog because a person can help himself" or "the person should've known better, but the dog can't think to get out of trouble".
My favorite dog has and always will have less value than any human. Except pedophiles.

Hahahaha, funny thing is the human will drownd the dog to save themselves, but the dog will drownd itself to save the human, go figure. You guy's need to get into the real world for a while.

My dog is worth more to me than a lot of people... I'd save him before many.... (referring to the crazies, like pedophiles mentioned above, and murderours, rapists, your common thief, terrorists, lots of welfare sucking idiots, etc... )

IMHO

I like the statement above as well!

I've got a guy working for me that loves dogs. FOR DINNER. Says he just can't understand why Americans like beef when dog is soooooo much better.

He thinks the rescue is ridiculous. Who's going to pay that much for a meal?!

You know.... I couldn't have said it better myself! This coming from someone that has had to rescue a dog off the side of a cliff. It is nothing but publicity. I like dogs as much as the next guy but I will always save a human before an animal. Sorry guys jmho. We get sent out all the time on a cat in a tree. I will NEVER rescue a cat out of a tree. I will not put my crew in danger to rescue some animal that will eventually find it's way back down. You have never seen a cats skeleton in a tree and you never will.
