Painting a topper

Found a great deal on a topper. but it is red and going on a white truck. going to paint it and was wondering if anyone has any experiance matching white spray paint to the white on our trucks. i know i can have it custom made from the factory paint code but the prices i have seen are over 20.00 a can. May have to but not wanting to spend that much..

I considered doing this myself a couple times but that's a lot of area to be painting with a rattle can and I don't think you will be able to make it look great. Think about it this way. Body shops don't want to do what you are about to do and if they don't want to do it there must be a reason...
Good luck to you...

My factory touch up paint doesn't match my truck very well.

My rig is "arctic white" which is pretty white. If yours is too,, get a can and test it on a piece of sheet metal. the factory primer is light gray.

Also the red may be hard to cover up and bleed thru, scruff it and prime it first.

See now, I thought this was going to be about painting Lary (Top). While I have never met him, I was going to have to suggest that was a bad idea. Scotty tells me he can get mean.

Use sealer, not primer unless it is a primer/sealer,red is hard to cover.

I have a Leer and my Body Shop has painted it several times due to accidents. It is always sanded, primed and repainted to match the paint on my truck.

Way too much area to try and paint using a spray can, Check with Maaco and have them match it to your truck color.

When I had the truck painted the first time I removed the windows and back door so they did not have to mask around them.

My paint cost over $100.00/ gallon.

Have a look at a paint book, you will be astonished just how many shades of White there are, pages of them.

I wish we had a Maco up here. body shops here want over a grand to do a basic sand and single stage on it. I just did it myself. only used maybe 5 cans of white. It actually looks decent. When i get all moved back to south bama, going to take it back off, sand all the way down and have it done right, but for now it will more than do. One thing though, i painted it with the rustoleum proffesional spray enamel, i saw the crystal clear enamel in there and wondered if i should put that on as a clear coat to make it shine more....

Not sure about the RustOleum but painting is not really that hard to do,

I painted my last Chevy truck after I sanded and did my own body work, my paint booth was a carport closed off using plastic film and I bought a decent gun to shoot the paint.

I used K-200 primer and Black Deltron Paint, I had never really painted anything so big as an entire truck but the paint went on easy and flowed out like glass, the trick with painting is preparation and absolutely cleanliness.

What brand is your shell?

Jarhead,
How the heck did you end up in Juneau?
I was born there. Before it was a state.
We have a house in Haines, spend every summer there.

Well, it was a long time coming. Did 10 years in the corps, got out and went into the CG. I wanted to try out AK for a tour so i put in for a job here. Been here two years and am retireing this summer so headed back out of here. We have definitely found out that this is not really the place for us. I think it is the lack of ability to get out of here on my terms...i would probably be ok in haines. Done alot of Salmon and halibut fishing though. Actually got some defrosting right now! Will be through haines headed to anchorage next weekend. Our jeep dealer here has a house in Haines on the river. they go there quite a bit.

Jim Lane has a nice truck!!

Glad you got it painted, Jarhead. At this point anything else you put on you'll be sanding off so if it looks good I'd just drive it!!

My friend Brett M. is on the Spar up there!

Thanks for puttin it on the line for us!

I have a Silver 2004 and found a good deal on a snug top that was the darker Mineral Grey. I ended up buying the cheap Duplicolor "bright Silver" from the the local parts store. To match i then lightly coated the sides withe the color match spray and finished it off with some Vansickle clear.

All of it is compatible and has been holding up fine. I need to wet sand and polish the topper as the clear is slick and has some very light orange peel, but other than that it is a match. Better than I expected. Probably have a day and $75 bucks into spraying it.

I am a fan of the Vansickle Paints. I did my diesel ramcharger with their white and it holds up great.
