Ouch !

So there I was, chaining down the excavator on the trailer.
Everyone else had left the job for the day.
All of a sudden I hear a bang as I am standing up.
Next thing I know, I am seeing stars and spitting out pieces of teeth and a whole lot of blood.
After I took a minute to regain my composure, I notice the chain broke and then hit me in the mouth.
This was a 3/8 grade 70 chain with a grade 80 ratchet binder.
Just glad that I was about 4 feet from it instead of right next to it.
Decided after that to call it a day and go home and have a couple of Advil.
Today I get to go to the dentist.
3 broken teeth and a whopper of a headache later.
You can never be too careful, always check your chains, found on one that broke, the weld on that link must not have been much good.
Threw that chain in the back of the truck, and will not be using it any more.

Be safe.

Glad you are OK. Hope that the dentist visit doesn't add too much pain to this experience. Or expense, for that matter. Did you have that headache checked out? Don't take any chances with your health!

Headache is almost gone now, other than my lip being split open and a little swollen, I feel fine.
Although, after the dentist is another story.

ooooouuuuuucchchchchchchchcc!!!!!! sorry to hear this.

This is alway my greatest fear when hunkering down on that boomer. I always think the chain could break and pop me between my eyes.

How many teeth are broke?

When my dad was my age (24), he had a chain break on him. It recoiled back and popped him in his thigh, and broke his leg.

im checking all my chains when I get home!

Unhappy

Hope you can eat more than soup after that one. I know how things that you have to bind down can break, after working for 25 years building heavy equipment {front loaders 2 yarders up to 15 yarders, 50 ton dump trucks,} Securing down and picking up those units takes alot of precaution and a big crane. We had our chains inspected by the state and by ourselves before binding down or lifting. I am glad thats all that happened to you. Myself I've lost a tooth and have had numerous stitches from accidents from working around heavy equipment. Be careful and look those chains over good. Enough of the lecture have a good "Dodge Day"

Man! Glad it didn't do anything worse. My uncle had an arm broke from one once. Saw one go while railheading armor vehicles in Germany. Luckily everybody was clear. Even after they were inspected by ourselves and the rail inspectors, youjust don't hang around standing next to one.

OUCH! Glad you are okay.

Tell this story to the people who like to use chains as tow straps for recovery.

Sorry to hear of your injury.

Lost 2 teeth myself, the same way.

Been VERY carefull around chains/binders ever since- actually prefer nylon straps now!

Back from the dentist.
Guess it was 4 teeth that caught it.
Had 3 teeth bonded.
Next thursday we get to have one pulled and get fitted for a bridge
Could have been worse, though.
If I hadn't been standing, it probably would have hit me in the eye.

Keep smiling

Man ... that's rough !!!! Luckily something that can be fixed one way or another. Only got one set of eyes ... thank God you didn't get rapped in one of them.

I caught a handle on the chin one time from my HandyMan jack ... didn't lose any teeth but I can imagine how you felt.

Im glad your ok. I have had my shoulder dislocated cause of a chain that came off one of the tractors at my grandpa's. That was a while back tho. Here's a short story....

I would post a pic but i know it will get taken off. Its pic of my half brother's brother and he will pulling someone out and they used a chain well the chain had snapped in the middle and sliced through the hood, cracked the block of the jeep and hit mike on the side of the face taking out half of his teeth one eye and his ear. The whole right side of his face is was basicly gone. It was so bad that I actually ralf'd. After seeing his face I cant stress it enough for people not to use chains. BUY A DAG GUM TOW STRAP!!!!!
