Just had the rear differential serviced with synthetic. (11,612mi.) Total came to $144.74 from the dealer. That hurt, but it was about $30.00 less than the estimate. When I got home I looked at my Maintenance Schedule and it shows that both front and rear should be changed every 12,000 miles. I do not remember seeing this for my 1500 gasser. Can this be correct? Tow a light boat,(2500 lbs) a few times a year. Do I really need this service this often? I want to this right, but do not want to spend money where it is not needed! no haven't changed mine and probally wont. My dad had an 93 f 350 and never changed the diff oil. Wes

 

If the drivetrain service is performed according to schedule backed by receipts/documentation during the warranty period, they'll have a hard time backing out of a warranty claim if one should arise. That's the only benefit I see. Otherwise overkill.<br><br>I bought my truck used, changed the diff. fluids at over 60K miles and they had never been done before. The rear had some sludge and the magnetic plug was full of metallic &quot;hair,&quot; but the front was clean as a whistle, and this thing had plowed snow. <br><br>I see why everyone calls 'em &quot;stealers.&quot; They probably thought they made you feel good at $30 less than quoted.

 

i pull heavy and change mine about every 25 to 30k which is about every 6 months. I dont use synthetic tho i so no need in it since i change so often. The best way to tell is when your rear end starts hopping when you turn tight with a load

 

Is that 12K service for both diffs listed under &quot;severe service&quot;? I pull a lot so I use synethic oil and change it once a year. If I was not pulling, I'd go 30K and then do service.

 

It's easy to do, just save the reciet and put the odo reading on them. Warany intact, save a bunch of $$$$<br><br>Glenn<br>
