I understand she feels like the dog was not at fault but what's more important? She definitely needs help.

That dog wouldn't be alive to eat another bite of dog food again. That dog knows what it did/can do. The dog won't forget that either, that animal needs to be put down.

Our two German Shepards took alot more abuse then that from my little sister growing up and they never once looked at her twice. They knew if they were being bothered to get up and leave.

What's this idiot lady going to do when she leaves the child unattended for a minute and she walks back in the room to find the dog's mouth wraped around her childs face? Second chances are not always in your favor.

The dog wouldn't last long in my house. If I didn't do something about it my wife definitely would.

Okay... this first line would take care of it for me.

"A little Australian boy's face was horribly scarred by the family dog - but his mother vowed to keep the pet, blaming the attack on her son."

I have absolutely no respect of her. Your children come first NO MATTER WHAT!!!!

I love my dog to death but if she ever shows ANY sign of aggression towards a human being we'll be taking a long walk. I've seen my two and three year old cousins abuse the snot out of my dog and never once has she so much as growled at them. That dog needs to be put down yesterday....

I have to look at this from the other side. I was the kid that got bit by the dog.

When I was five I toddled my happy little butt into the neighbor's yard. They had several dogs; pincher's and shepard's and such. None of these dogs had a mean hair on their body.

They did not attack me. They came up to me and I was just the wrong height. I lost my balance. They barked. Who knows what really happened. But I ended up w/ my cheek sliced open. I had one little flap of skin holding the side of my mouth together. I had to have been one heck of a sight walking up the street to my house with my hand in my mouth.

The entire block was ready to put those dogs down. My mom and dad stood there and protected those dogs. I was the one in the wrong place.

I was very lucky that day and the children's hospital just happened to have one of the best plastic surgeons on the west coast there given a lecture. 25 year later I have a great 3 inch scar on my cheek.

Do I hate dogs? No! Do I fear dogs? No! Do I hold any grudge against my parents or the neighbors? No!

We are reading one media generated side of the story. I'm sure if there was a news paper article from my incident it would have read even worse.

Just wonderin' if you have any kids yourself? I hve two daughters, and two lovable, friendly, Dachsunds. Both were around before the kids, but if they attacked my kids, they'de be out the door in a heartbeat.

I was bit by a Big Shepard as a kid. I had been teasing it from a fence and fell in his yard. Big difference IMHO.

My dog just about got it,if it had not been for my wife asking me not to,I'd have shot mine, she bit a little girl on the back, not really her fault, but there's risk in letting a dog live around kids.
Thank goodness she's been good since.
love that dog like she was my own little girl.
(again wife=right)

Many of you are still placing the blame in the wrong direction in my opinion , not the child , not the dog , but the dog owner . Many people who have dogs treat them like people instead of dogs causing grief for the owner and the dog , Alfa leader needs to be decided and tragedies like this will not happen and people who can't should try cats . Treating a dog like anything but a dog is not normal for the dog and will cause nothing but grief down the road , a dog is a pack animal and the owner needs to be pack leader . This all can be done with out mistreating the animal , just a lot of patience and time .

Just like Cesar on the Dog Whisperer says. Pack leader, calm assertive.

We have a little dog that actually bit my mother-in-law. She had been chasing my daughter around the house playing and made a move like she was going to grab her. My little girl was screaming and the dog snapped my MIL.
In that case, I couldn't really blame the dog.

I'm sure that we're not hearing the whole story, but I do have to say that if any of my dogs ever showed aggression towards my kids, they wouldn't be my dogs anymore.

Agreed. The mom's at fault here. She says in the article that she knew that the dog would 'get cranky' if the kid kept pestering it. She should have separated the two as soon as the kid ignored her warning and started climbing on the dog, if she knew that would happen.
