I work for a machine shop/packer shop in my town. I break down packers, clean um up and put um back together. I also haul packers around too, not to the rigs but around town to different packer shops.

I started with Cooper-Bessemer in 1973. Today it's called Cooper Compression and I'm still with them in home office technical management. I still get to the field, but too often it's in conference rooms and not climbing on the big iron!

Spent a season working drill ships up in the Chukchi, another season working the rigs off Santa Barbara. Spent another 9 years in refining....no money in it anymore.
Left petrochem 6 years ago and never looked back, now I make $20K/year more than I ever made working oil patch and work about 2/3 as much.
But I do miss it sometimes....

I have only been tied to this industry about 5 years now. I have noticed that once someone really starts to enjoy the petroleum industry, they are hooked on it for life. the ups, the downs, the layoffs. I haven't seen another industry so ready to spend money and then so tight with spending 10 minutes later...
Its wild...

I spent several years as school boy help in the petroleum industry (transportation and midstreaming) in the late 70's. Didn't care for it much but I could had a chance for maritime school.
