Went to the shop the other day to get lubed, the guy at the counter asked what year it was, I said 02' and he said...Oh...you have the "loud" CTD. ;D I have heard this before here on DTR but never the reason why mine is louder than an 03' -04'. Can somebody lay out the tech. reasons for this? I like it LOUD.....especially now in the 15 degree weather in Spokane, WA. Silencer ring was gone as of last weekend.....wanted to remove the muffler, but since I live in apartments and back into my covered spot (so I am not sticking half way out!) well, lets just say my tail pipe is only 10 feet from my neighboors bedroom window.....I rattle em' at 5:30 am as it is! Gonna hold off on getting the sawzzall out!

Now WHY would they go and do something like that! I saw (or rather heard) a guy up near Canada last summer pullin' out of a truck stop....... he was gettin' on it, silencer ring must have been gone .....stacks spewing black smoke ......no telling what else he had done. I thought it was a BIG RIG!!!!!! Love at first sight! (and sound!)

How difficult is it to remove the silencer ring on 03's? Honestly, this thing is way too quiet.

 

The 02' consisted of accessing the front of the turbo and using a small screwdriver to pop out the (2) rings....5 minutes. 03' can't be too different (?). :-

Driving from Seattle to Spokane yesterday going over the Cascades I was really impressed by the sound......not a whole lot louder but "sweeter".

It's pretty easy...and a quick search on "silencer ring" will find you several threads that discuss how to remove it...including pictures. Honestly though, it doesn't make THAT much difference removing the ring. You hear the turbo a little more but that's about it.

 

Take the silencer ring out and ditch the stock air filter, put a K & N or equivalent... then he'll sing to ya!

 

What about one of those Scotty Air 3's? Are they good for any real power? IT says all sorts of stuff about lower EGt's which is always good.
