Anyone ever cook any type of food, using your engine? The idea popped in my head, I think it would be a cool way to have some hot food on a long trip. Any one ever done this?

When I worked the tow boats the chief would cook catfish on the engine exhaust mainfolds wraped in tin foil

 

when i ran yarder i used to cook my burritos on the manifold and canned beans down INSIDE the exhaust on a 528 skidder! they make stuff for cooking with you snowmobiles but i havent tried that

 

I was a truck driver in the Marine Corps during the Korean war. We routinely heated our "C" rations on the truck engines. If you picked a spot too hot, you may overpressurize the can tho. In that case, you punched a small vent hole in the top. One essential ingredient we always carried was a bottle of hot sauce. You can improve the taste of most anything with that.

 

I would always keep a couple of cans of raviolis, ready-to-eat soup, ect. and a military can opener in my service truck. That way, if I was going to be stuck on a job site all day, I still had lunch. Just pop a small hole in the top, and set on the exhaust manifold. Worked great, but one piece of advice, put on a pair of heavy gloves before you grab the can.

 

the man i buy tools from sets a can of campbells soup on his intake manifold of his stepvan, driving from atlanta he says its plenty hot by lunchtime.

 

I have cooked hamburger, potatoes, carrots and onions wrapped in tinfoil and wire-tied behind the read jug of a Harley. About 70-75 miles @ 60 mph and wha-la ... a meal fit for a king (or a greasy biker whatever the case may be).

We have whats called a hotdogger on our snowmobiles, little can tied to the exhaust pipe. Run about 15 minutes and it is plenty warm especially when it is about 10 deg. outside.

You could probably rig something to do tv dinners. We use to use various engine's and and vehicle heaters to heat our MRE's and other canned goods in the service. An M-1 Abrams would do an MRE thre quickest. Use to hang our laundry behind them too.

 

Redleg you beat me to it. I try to keep a few MRE's in the truck. After using the chemical heaters for "bottle bombs", I find that a few minutes of manifold time make them pretty tasty. (with enough hot sauce to choke a horse).

mentioned the mre thing brings back best "snack" idea I ever had, try finding the dehydratede peaches in syrup, meant to be rehydrated with water to make them just like canned peaches, living on a party campus for a few years gave me the idea to rehydrate with rum! Dark is better Captain Morgan was the favorite.

 

That's been done at a few barracks parties. CM is good, but try it with Malibu.
