NP 241 Transfer Case

I am attemping to work on my 1994 Chevy 1/2 ton 4 x4 transfer case. I suspect the chain needs replacement. I am going to split the transfer case while it is still in the truck. Other than removing the rear prop shaft and the case bolts, do I need to dissassemble any of the tail cone that receives the rear prop prior to splitting the case cover??

Thanks,

Basslaker1

just drop the front drive shaft, shift rod,and the 6 bolts that hold the transfer case to the trans adapter. then you can split the t/c. other wise you`ll look like a cub bear trying to lace up a football !! you can`t split the case AND get it back together while it is verticle.

Agreed. For the extra time, drop it out and work on the bench.

The transfer case needs to be vertical to be put back together, so no matter what you will need to pull it.

Good advice from the other posts.

the out put shaft has to be verticle, and the case has to be horizontal to get the gears, shift linkage, and chain all back together.

Splain the difference.. More accurately can the t-case be overhauled while in the truck?

Tim, Y'all are saying the same thing, just different perspectives of what is horizontal and vertical.

He means the face of the transfer case vertical, and you mean the shafts........

In a word NO! to rebuild, the out put shaft has to be verticle. that means up towards the sky, and the part of the case that has the chain will be horizontal, with the front out put shaft down. it has to be in this position to get the planitary gears, chain, and internal shift linkage apart and back together. then the back half of the case can be installed with the oil pump and then the out put shaft housing.

Thanks to all for the responses. It's unanimous, I will be pulling the t-case out of the truck!! My shade tree buddies were leading me down a dead end road..better to just count on them for game scores!

I knew that Pat, I was just keeping it short to the point and hoping he would catch it the way you did.. No harm or foul either way.
