Re:Northern Folks

20 degrees this morning, wore shorts and tanktop to take the kids to school.

35 right now.
Just came back from a trip outside (don't smoke in the house), still wearing shorts and tanktop.
I did put on the flip flops as ground is a bit frosty and covered in white stuff.

Taking the kids downtown to see the Christmas Lights tonight,
and I might put on my only pair of long jeans.
Might. ;D
Believe it or not, I have seen it go below 0 here in the DFW area with a high temperature for the day of +30F and lows at night in the low teens and single digits. That lasted for 3 weeks.
You must be OLD!! I don't ever remember it getting that cold and STAYING that cold for that long. The coldest I remember around these parts was down in the low teens...and that usually doesn't last. Now....I've seen the wind chill in the single digits and below zero, but never the actual temperature.

Hoss: Winter of 1979. The next summer was the record here for the number of days over 100. And, also the record high of 116. That ain't that far back - but then again I am getting older (60) but feel like a kid.

I'm not old your just to young.I think he is referring to the winter of 1983-84. I worked for 4 days straight with 1 or 2 hours of sleep. We had water mains frozen all over Carrolton.

OK you beat me to the punch I was on the road that year and was not at home.

HOHN,
Midland and Odessa are so bad, most of us don't even count them as part of Texas. They're a days drive from civilization in any direction.

Re:Northern Folks

HOSS, you must have been born when that winter happened, our heater ran 24/7 and could not keep the house warm, 3500 sq ft so I blocked off 3/4 of the vents, moved the bed and baby into the den, kept a fire going in the fire place for over 3 1/2 weeks JUST to stay warm. But I think it was more like 1980 or 81, I'm too old to remember the date, but not the COLD, because the temp here did not go ABOVE 30* for over 3 weeks. The snow of 1993 wasn't nuttin compared to that COLD

We suthern folks really peeciate ya'll yankees likin dat cole stuff up thar - - makes more room for usin's down here. *** visit in da winner when you can't stand it no mo, bring yo money, spend it, den go home and quit drivin in the left lane goin 36 mph.
Hey, been there, done that, have the frost bite marks to prove it. Minnesota, duck hunting at -40 - - really stupid as I look back. And dress for it - - no way. Now, when it gets a little bit warm down here, we put on the bathing suit, jump in the pool with a lemonade and read a book. Then, go inside in the air conditioning. Shorts on 9 months of the year. Snow? Ice? Smoke out your nose? NOPE. But, I sure like coming your way in the summer. 8) 8)

Yeah well since it was 35 here today the wife, kids and I (after a refreshing snack of iced tea and watermelon) did some naked snowshoeing out on the back forty and capped it all off with a dip in the river to cool off. It'll be good to sleep with the windows open again, love that fresh air-makes me sleep like a baby. 8)

Re:Northern Folks

Few years ago in Minnesota, we did not get above 0 degrees for 23 days in a row in January. It helped weed out some junkie cars and trucks! I agree with MNTom on you can always put more stuff on.

You know when it is cold when you see "Ice Dogs" arround the moon!

Re:Northern Folks

Bleh. Even colder when you see "sun dogs".

I was living in San Antonio in 1984 when we got 13 inches of snow. Talk about shutting a city down for 3 days. Ewwww!

Re:Northern Folks

You scare me too, Phox. Been there, done that, and it stinks. There is always some mountain man trying to prove he's tough. Sure is pretty to look at, though. A fresh snow fall in the mountains is awesome.
There are some very nice things to be said about living in the south. Rving, boating, fishing, golfing and tennis are just available about 365 days a year. No mothballing the RV for six months, pulling the boat and winterizing it and hiding the clubs in the attic. Nope, about the time you guys are doing that up north we are increasing our usage. Pretty nice. 8) 8)
(sure chilly tonight - - reminds me why I moved to Florida - - down to a lousy 38 tonight. Man, that sucks. Just give it two days.)
