Northern Folks

After watching the weather this morning, there's not doubt that all of you living north of the Red River are a lot tougher then this Texas Flatlander. It was a mere 28* here this morning and I almost refused to go outside! People say you get used to the cold, but I'm afraid my skin is just too thin.

With Humble Respect,
CR 8)

Re:Northern Folks

I miss the heat. Would rather be home in San Antonio where I can ride pretty much all year. I hate storing the bike for the winter. Doesn't seem proper.

Yea, Like I tell people, "You can always put more clothes on but, you can only take off so much". Ya know, that don't paint a pretty picture. :P :P

Re:Northern Folks

Never thought I'd say I missed the heat in 'Bama, but when you start considering 20 degrees warm and at 30 your draggin' the "summer clothes" back out - It just ain't right! :P

I'm with ya man. -40 isn't a big deal to me, but that 110F stuff can kill a guy.

Re:Northern Folks

I'm with Rod on that one.. I was working offshore Louisiana in July in the Gulf of Mexico on some platforms.. It was about 105° with no wind and blaring sun.. I guess I looked pretty sickly as I was always offered some shade and water. Anyone who knows what Nomex is will understand you don't get alot of ventilation.

I can handle the -40 stuff.

Re:Northern Folks

i love the summer. I like the winter for about 1 week. thats all i need to get tired of it.

down here on the Texas coast, it doesnt get over 100, but the humidity is the killer. it makes it feel like 110!! I love it though. There is nothing i like better than being outside working in the heat, and working up a good sweat! Sure, it will kill you, but thats if your an idiot and dont keep your body hydrated.

on the other hand, I hate being outside in my good clothes working up a sweat..that sucks. lol

anything below 50 degrees is miserable to me. i wish it would stay about 70 degrees all day, with about .000005 percent humidity.

Re:Northern Folks

We give our crews constant breaks (they all wear suits similar to Nomex, excecpt they are not porous), but at least we can work in the summers. We avoid working in the winters in the north because it is nearly impossible to work outdoors in the weather up there...Cold Machinery, frozen tracks, frozen terrain, etc.

Re:Northern Folks

Definitely easier to warm up, besides... it keeps the bugs away.

Palmetto:

I'm with you 100%.

Believe it or not, I have seen it go below 0 here in the DFW area with a high temperature for the day of +30F and lows at night in the low teens and single digits. That lasted for 3 weeks.

Was raised (not grew up) up north and you could not get me to go back except for hunting and fishing.

Re:Northern Folks

No doubt I prefer the cold. I've lived in WI, ND, WY, TX, CO, and GA.

I grew up in WI and ND. ND gets quite a bit colder (and windier) but it's drier, so I think WI probably feels every bit as bad.

TX was incredibly hot. I remember a couple of 115 days in Midland. Not much you can do then.

GA was pure misery. At least TX was a little dry. I could not function outside in GA. I hated it.

Now I am high and dry in Cheyenne! This is almost the perfect climate. It gets a little windy (30-40mph g65mph), but it's bearable.

I second the statement about adding clothes. It's a LOT easier to get warm when cold than it is to cool off when hot.

Given my druthers (and a lot of money) I would retire in Rapid City, Bismarck, or Winnipeg. I am happy to be back up North!!!
