Another thing you might consider, a fixed power scope is going to be cheaper (ie, you can get better optics by giving up the variable power).
The only time I use a higher power is at the range. If your buddies are like mine, the first thing they will do is catch you not looking and crank your scope all the way up. A fixed power will prevent that.

Nice choice on the rifle if I may say so. I've been wanting a model 70 for sometime now. I'd like to get a pre-war model though, but at around $700 it'll have to wait. That or a AR-30, I really like that one!! I'd have to agree on the scope choices from above, don't cheap out especially if you have that trophy buck in your sights!!!

What is different about the pre-war model???
