Is it normal not to put re-bar in the footings?? If so why, what would it hurt?
Footings for my new house got poured today and I did ask. And the more I think about it, it doesn't seem right.

how deep into the ground was it and what was the subgrade composed of?? sounds really thin for a footing but it is has a hard subgrade you MIGHT be ok but I think you will have problems latter on it life. Might want to call a local engineer or building permit office to see what code requires.

It was engineered. But I don't have the specs the contractors do.
The footings are 4 feet deep and the ground is hard dry clay

If the footings are 4' deep, then I have never seen anything that large poured without rebar. I've done commercial work for 25+ years, and have poured 1000's of yards of concrete. Never heard of pouring a lighter mixture for footing either.
wv state building codes require a min of 2500 psi for footers, most contractor use 300 for basement slabs and 3500 for the garages. I could never figure it out either. and I think his footers are 4' into the ground to get below the frosr line.
We are required to go a min. depth and insulate the footing to the frost line. I still don't understand why rebar is not required......I can see the 2500 concrete ( although I've only used that light a mix for sidewalks) and the 3000 + for the slab. What was this 2'X 6" footing?
