New Baby

Maybe not what you thought. We are on the very short list to care for orphaned horses for the BLM from their wild horse program. On the east side of town there is a State prison complex. The BLM uses this facility for marshalling all of the wild horse and burros that are rounded up in the western US. But when a baby is orphaned the inmates can't look after them 24 hours a day. So my wife got the call around 1400 today to see if we could take an orphan. He was born today and when they tried to cut him and his mother out of the herd she broke her hip and had to be put down. This will make the third one we've gottten. The first one we got we adopted and he's about 23 months old. No one thought he would last 24 hours. The second one was very sick and we tried for 4 days but couldn't keep her alive. Now my wife will be feeding this one every 1 to 1.5 hours. He seems very strong and I hope we can keep him alive.

I always wondered about the wild horse adoptions. Seems like a great way to get a horse !!

I am guessing that if you get them as a baby, they can be raised and broke just like a domesticated one, right ??

When I was a kid, we used to bring apples to the wild burros and Mustangs in Nevada. They would surround you just to get a treat. Neat animals ... kinda skittish though.

You are right about being able to raise them for your personal use, although you can do the same with older animals as well. That's what we are doing with the first one we got and adopted. We have a friend that has 4 of them and the are the best behaved horses you could ask for. The inmates can even brake and train the horse you want to adopt for you.

There is a lot of information here.
