Need Project Manager software

I'm starting a new Project Manager job at the beginning of 06 and I need some software to help me coordinate projects from beginning to completion. If someone has any software, please share it with me or point me in the right direction.

Thanks, Tommy

I've used Microsoft Project before. Lets you set timelines/milestones etc. You can do staffing plans with it and produce charts (like Gantt charts) out the wazzoo.

We use MS Project at work. We use it for our day to day operations, combined with (SAP/IPES ). We use it for all of our maintenance. Not just Projects.

As much as I don't like it compared to some of the more specialized products, MS Project (like Word, Excel, etc.) is pretty much becoming an industry standard.

Is the Microsoft project compatable with Word and Excel? That is a must, I need to email reports either in Word or Excel files.
I've found MS Project on 50-80 bucks, not too bad.

Thanks for the excellent responses!!!!

$50-80 for a Microsoft Product???...

I dont think so. I would guess, that is a pirated copy - I would be a little concerned using a pirated copy of anything (especially for business).

$199 - retails for supposedly $999 (yeah, Mr. Gates likes his money)

The large computer company I work for has standardized on MS Project even though we are pushing open source for everything.

There are other scheduling packages available but they may not interface with the common spreadsheet programs. Gotta love proprietary software.

It will interface with Word and Excel. I think that that price is cheap to. I thought that it was around $800-900. It is definately becoming an industry standard. To give Microsoft their due. I sure like excel better than the old Lotus 1,2,3 we used to use. Much easier for a dummy like me to use with no training.
