Need Help With Spark Plugs
Need Help With Spark Plugs
Well, tomorrow, I've selected myself (I actually enjoy working on stuff) to do maintainance on a '95 Chevy Lumina.
Change the Oil and Filter (Valvoline MaxLife and Purolater PureOne Filter)
Rotate the Tires (This should be fun to do in the garage with one jack)
Top of all of the other liquids
Give it a bath (inside and out)
AND, change the spark plugs. Here, I have a few questions:
1. Is there a certain torque value the plugs are suppose to be torqued to?
2. Do I need to use any compound on the threads?
Also, thinking about going ahead and replacing the wires too...anything I should know here?
Justin.

Re:Need Help With Spark Plugs
I've always screwed sparkplugs in until the crush-washer makes contact then about 1/2 turn, kinda "Good-n-tight" torque spec. Save the gorilla strength for the lug nuts on a dually
I always use anti-seize compound on sparkplugs, not a lot, just enough to coat the first few threads so it spreads as the plug gets turned in.
As far as plug wires, do one at a time, match it to the best matching length on the new wires, then install that one and go to the next.
Please use a jack stand if you're working under the vehicle.
We want to have you posting tomorrow night, not laid up or worse if the jack lets go.
It will also hold up one end while you move the jack to the other (and place the other jack stand) so you can pull two tires at a time to rotate.

Re:Need Help With Spark Plugs
First off never ever ever use ac delco plugs they are the worst out there. Second make sure the engine is cold if it is hot the alluminum heads can gall {or how ever you spell it} and you can ruin the threads in the spark plug holes. Always reinstall with antiseeze compound. Matt

I'll try and help a little bit here.<br><br>My mom drives an 93 Grand Am and I have always replaced the plugs with AC's. The car has 160k on it and has run AC plugs since new. I would invest in a swivil joint for the rachet if you don't have one and put just a dab of anti-seize on the threads.<br><br>By the way I hate working on her car,
Try and change out a heater core and you'll know what I mean. :'(<br><br>DB

Re:Need Help With Spark Plugs
I have changed more spark plugs then most of you have ever seen and the ones that give the most problem are AC's Like it or not that is my experiance. I just would not put them back in a car that I took them out of ll and wuld not pay the premium price to get a lesser plug. Funny this dodge site supporting General Motors product.
Re:Need Help With Spark Plugs
I used NGK V-Groove plugs in my '86 305 and my wife's 89 Cavalier and had good luck with them. My dad was an auto mechanic for 40 years, liked AC and Autolite, hated Champion. Hey, I bet we could start a spark-plug war thread that would rival any tranny war thread if we aren't careful.
Re:Need Help With Spark Plugs
OK, guys, enough with the spark plug war here or I won't hesitate to shut this thread down. If you want to continue with it, do it off the forum. If you can't constructively offer some suggestions, then don't post a response.
