Need Help with buying memory
Hey guys,
in thread on here a few months back, i was told my Dell 8250 was as slow as it is due to a lack of RAM and I should upgrade it.
I have occasionally looked around the 'net since, and can not find anywhere( other than the Dell website) that is selling memory compatible with a Dimension 8250...
Not even having any luck on Ebay
Dell wants over $200 for the 2Gb memory upgrade and I cant afford to spend near that much on it..
Current system info is:
Dell Dimension 8250
Pentium(R) 4cpu 2.40 Ghz
2.39Ghz 256MB of Ram
Any suggestions on how i can upgrade this cheap?
Also, I really dont understand a whole lot about computers.. should I be looking for RAM, DDRAM or what??

you found a computer with only 256 mb of ram??? Wow
dell's website should say what type or ram.
if its a desktop, its probably ddram.
you might try newegg.com or pricewatch.com

Ahhh, the limited series of Pentium 4 PCs with Rambus memory, or RDRAM. It never got popular due to its price and there has since been better products out. When it came out, it was faster than needed and expensive. It never caught on, but DDR and now DDR2 did. Unforunately, since it is not very common, it is going to be expensive. I would say you will be better off getting a new PC. Dell has deals fairly often for $399 you get a new PC with 1GB Ram and a 19" LCD monitor.
Saw the title....
had to pick on you but took pity.......I still wear an analog watch.

yes, rambus is going to be pricey. check around and compare prices, dell may be just as competatively priced as others.

Well, I have checked 4 pages of Google Search= "DRam Memory" and the cheapest I have found is $159 for 268MB of memory( per stick, system requires two) or $534 for a 1GB "kit"...
looking at a new PC may be the right advise..

OK, I found where I can buy another Dell 8250 that has 512MB of RDRam installed for under $100...
Couldnt i just take the memory cards out of it and install them in my current one? That way i wouldnt have to transfer files and all that...

yes but do I have to retype everythig I said in PM?
Yes, you can do the memory swap. If you only have 1 slot on your computer filled, and the parts unit you are getting only has one slot filled, you can take the bigger memory and put it in slot 1 and your smaller memory in slot 2. Make sure they have the same speed.
Another option, if that don't work, take your hard drive out and swap it in to the parts computer.
Good luck, remember to ground yourself to the computer case before removing any component.

Yes, you could do that and you will have what was considerred to be the bare minimum just a few years ago. You probably would only need to install one of the cards to bring your machine up to the 512 since you likely have a single 256 card in it now. A new PC with a gig+ would give you vastly superior performance though.
