I'm not that familiar with online music either, but it pretty much boils down to "if you don't pay for it, it's illegal"

Phox hit it on the head. The free MP3 programs like Kazaa, Morpheus, and Limewire are what the RIAA don't like. Because you can use those programs and get 'free' music. The services like iTunes and the new Napster, you pay for and are legal.

Shareaza here. Seems to find anything there is to find, apart from Holset compressor maps

I scan executable files with Norton Antivitrus before installation. A few harmful exe files have been binned.
Otherwise no viruses with Shareaza at all. I am pleased with it.

Why don't you guys record from the TV??? I use a TV tuner card and tune into a XM station on Direct TV and record all the MP3's I want from the TV! This is completely legal to do! If you want more instructions on how to do it I will post a thread on how to do it...

Quality is excellent and you can reocrd from any type of device (Direct TV, VCR, DVD, CD, Etc.)...

Simple version of producing your own MP3 legally...

You need...
  • Computer (Duh... )
  • Sound card with line in port (Blue plug) Don't use RED (Microphone)
  • Free hard drive space (lots of it...)
  • VCR (With a new blank tape) Must have A/V ports
  • Direct TV or similar with music channels
  • Goldwave (Recording software)
  • 1/8" Ich Headset jack to RCA Plug (Convertion cable) Can be purchased at Radio Shack
  • Portable TV or TV Tuner card (To watch video)
Basically set up you VCR with a blank tape. Start recording a music channel you want from Direct TV or what ever channel. Make sure your VCR is set for EP speed and not SP... Get more on the tape that way and it makes it easier to pan foreward and backwards in time. Now when the tape is full we more over to the computer.

Hook up the patch cable to the VCR on the audio output (RCA) and plug the headset plug into the blue port on the sound card (Typically LINE IN) NOT MICROPHONE! (Which is RED) It nice to have a TV tuner card at this point to watch the screen for titles but a small portable TV works too.

Install and set up Goldwave. You might want to play with it a bit to understand the software and editing first for awhile till you get the hang of it. You will also have to setup you volumes as well... Too much will distort the music and too little will of course make it weak.

But... Now you play the VCR Audio into the computer and goldwave records it. Then you can clip the begin and ends of the audio track and then save it as a MP3. It will take some practice on controlling your VCR and the computer to record music. But now when you done recording a song you can see the artist and title info on the TV and save the file properly with proper artist - title.mp3 format.

You can basically record from any device you want. Straight from a Direct TV box, VCR, DVD player, TV, Etc... Anything that has RCA jacks that you can plug into.

NOTICE: I'm not responsible for any damages that occur from using this information.

My MP3 collection is over 4,500 MP3's currently and it takes up over 19 GB worth of hard drive. It would take me over 14 days (2 weeks) to play the entire MP3 pile once!

Any more questions on how to setup let me know I'm willing to explain more...

I made a quick pic of the back of my computer showing the hook up using a TV Tuner card.

It's not required to have the TV tuner card but it sure makes it nice. Basically you got to worry about getting the audio input to the blue port on the sound card.

Just curious...what are damages that could occur from doing this?

Also is there any compromise of the quality of recording these from a VCR tape, or is is better to record straight from the digital source, such as Direct TV box, etc.....?

When I made the sound slip of my truck that I have posted here I used my camcorder. Tied in the audio into the AUX in jack on my Sound Blaster card. Recorded the audio into a WAV file then converted to MP3. The quality is real good, almost like you are standing there with the truck. The sound quality can be affected by cheap low end sound cards. My sound card isn't high end (like a Sound Blaster Audigy card) but is one of the higher end mid range cards.

Go there to hear the sound clip I took and converted. Sound quality is real good. But with a setup like mine you are limited by the quality of the source that recorded the music or sounds to begin with. As long as it sounds decent on the source (VCR, CD, whatever) you shouldn't have any issues with sound quality after conversion.

The quality loss in minimal...

As for damages... If your using a ampilifed source and put to much input power to your sound card could cook it. I always start with the volumes down really low and tune it to get about 0.8 to 1.0 on the goldwave. Then you recordings will be nice and powerful... But pushing beyond this will distort the Bass really badly (You start clipping the sine wave off)... Also a clue that your over-driving your sound card. Also NEVER to plug into the microphone port! This is intended for HIGH impediance device like a MICROPHONE! You risk cooking your card using the microphone port...

And yes JR... I'm using a sound Blaster audigy... Work wonderful. Goldwave does wonders for cleaning up the track. Just got to feed it something.

Yes you can record straight from a digital source too... Nothing wrong with that. Just keep a pen and paper handy to write down the artist and title info...

It nice to enlighten people to a different way of doing it...

You guys are giving me a BAD Idea... I might have to record some sound bytes and create a windows theme pack for DTR members! What do you think???

A good program for cleaning up those recordings if necessary is Acoustica. Well worth the $35. I'm in the process of getting ready to transfer much of our vinyl to MP3 using my Neuros recorder. Much smaller and more portable than a PC; I just plug it into the stereo receiver as if it were a tape deck, play the record, and voila! instant MP3 from vinyl. Clean it up with Acoustica, and it's definitely listenable. Not as clean as a digital rip from a digitally recorded CD, but usable nonetheless.

Oooohhhh Now that is a GREAT idea. Door chime for minor errors, horn for major errors, Startup and shutdown is obvious). Hmmm, what else could be put in...

Get a engine start up clip for Starting Windows, A engine shutdown with a power chirp would be great for a shutdown.

Hmmmm... Look at your list in the sounds in the control panel... We might be able to build something up... How many different sounds can we get from a Cummins???

Why be like everyone else.... I guess it's time to dig up the laptop and hook up the microphone and have some fun...
