Mozilla Thunderbird help

I am trying to install and run Mozilla Thunderbird. The installation went smoothly but hangs up when I receive the message "Cannot connect to POP3" How do I configure this program for POP3?

Thanks. It helped a bit, but I am still having the same problem. Will fight with it some more in a few days.

POP3 is a reference to your email server, that is where your email program looks for your emails when you check your email.
The server is usually provided by your ISP although there are other email providers as well such as hotmail etc.and some of them do not use POP (Post Office Protocol) and instead are web based in that you use a web browser to check your mail.
If you are using a POP3 based mailserver such as Outlook Express then you can open that program, click on tools/accounts and highlight your email account name then click on "edit".That will open a dialogue with all your email settings in it which you can then copy or somehow transfer to your new email program and if you do it right it should work.
Sometimes your ISP will provide you with an instruction sheet or you can check their tech support site for instructions that only require you to substitute your user name for their generic setup instructions.
Basically you are just telling your email program where to look and authenticating yourself to the server that you have permission to check your email account.
Get the settings for your SMTP server while you are there because that is the server that handles the email you send out.(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.) Ron g
