Moving to Texas! Advice?

I've accepted a new position in Houston Texas relating to Oilfield work. Anybody have any ideas as to what areas you would prefer to live in? I'm from a small town in Northern Michigan and want to make the transition easy....if thats possible
Home base is in West Houston (near Katy)

The job is an opportunity I cannot pass up. I have been doing automotive work for the last 4 years and got a job doing field service work for oil rigs. The money is insane and for a single 23 year old its too good to pass up. I think my cummins will fit right in down there as well haha

Welcome to Texas! And to the heat and humidity. Remember, we have only two seasons here, summer and winter (and that's mild).
If near Katy I would say Katy or Brookshire.

the best advice I can give is find a place that is closer to the center of the city than work. Or go to work an hour and a half early. between 7 and 8 can have some heavy traffic. Also, Avoid a location that will put you on the 10 or the 610. The road construction you see has been going on for the past 50 to 60 years. dont expect it to end anytime soon.

I've never heard Brookshire, Texas mentioned so many times in my entire life. I thought there were only 15 folks in the world that ever heard of it!

We have a ranch there and I still have to explain; "You know where Katy is, well blink and you're past Brookshire."

Welcome to the PATCH Cartman. Katy or further west is better than downtown. If your office is West then you got to be West. Cross town stuff would be insane. I had to spend 9 months down there for a new project. I ended up close in because that's where the office was. Office was right at the 610/290 intersection. Enjoy the Outdoor World store. If you've never been to one it's a great experience. Also the Livstock Show and Rodeo is a must see. Lot's of great restaurants down there. Of course if you are going to be a Service Hand you won't have time to see any of that stuff. You will probably be working all the time. Is it one of the big service company's?

You might check this little town out if you dont want to live in the city. Ive got a buddy who lives there and works in Houston and he loves it. They have pretty good schools too. Don't know other than that, I live up just south west of Ft Worth.

No! No! No!, Herb, you got it wrong! We don't mind bringing in a few folks from the North......it's from the South that we're trying to stop.

Bring that Cummins on down, Cartman! Great State and great people.

Just remember, the war between the states is in a cease fire. They are not gonna take kindly to dang yankees.

Yankee = a northerner who comes to visit.
Dang yankee = a northerner who comes to stay.
