more boat motor help
I took apart the carb today, I probably did it wrong, but I just took out all the bolts holding it together, cleaned everything I could get at, and put it back together. went to start the motor, and there is no difference.
I still cant get it to idle regularly. I have to feather the throttle carefully, until it gets used to the idle, and only then will it idle. what else should I look in to? I called the boat shop, they want 350 to tear it apart and redo it, but I dont think thats worth it, seeing as he said a new one would be 500. hmmmm. my goal for this motor is to make it so it idles smoothly, so I can shift between forward and reverse without jarring anything too much. I dont need it for trolling as I have a trolling motor. any ideas would be awesome.

not sure how the carb is built, I have only been in Holly carbs but cleaning it and rebuilding it involves making sure the needle valves are seating properly, the floats move freely, all the valving and venturis are free flowing.
eta: I just chased down your other thread. after 6 or 7 years, any fuel that was in the carb has evaporated out leaving a dust like material in the bowl, the fresh fuel mixed with this and has probably plugged some of the small orifices and venturis in the carb.
Letme look around and see what I can come up with.

I just read your thread today for the first time. I was an outboard motor mechanic in the late sixties. Varnish in the carbs is usually the most common problem with outboards because of the long lay up periods.
Today's fuels are especially bad for storage. The ethanol absorbs water and shouldn't be used in boats. It also causes the esters to desolve in the fiberglass tanks and screws up engines by clogging up the carb and the rings. Please give me a PM with a description of your boat and engine. I may not be of any help but what have you to loose?

you talking about spark plugs? I pulled them out today, and they both look the same, I am going to get new ones though, cause they look pretty old, and have a significant gap goin on...
I dont think it has a fuel pump. I took apart the fuel filter today (and like an idiot forgot how it went back together), and by the looks of it, it goes straight from the fuel tank and bulb into the filter, then straight down to the carb.

Not a mechanic here but it really sounds like the choke is not operating properly. Since you have to feather it for a bit. Just an old guy that has messed with a bunch of different motors, and it sounds like a choke issue to me.

shot in the dark here; My buddy had a 50 horse merc (86 or so) that ran REALLY BAD. It wouldn't idle, or go fast enough to plane. 1 can of Sea-foam and that's all she wrote. I mean, it was INSTANT!!! Give it a shot- I was amazed.

I need to get the fuel filter working again first, apparently if you dont pay attention while taking it apart, its hard to get working again
then its on to new spark plugs.
