I might (haven't checked yet) need to add some oil to my diff since the folks at the factory apparently don't know how to fill them up. Can I just go buy any brand of the proper weight oil and top it off or do I have to use the same Mopar stuff they used at the factory? I'd like to avoid draining the diff and just pouring all new stuff in if I can help it.<br><br>I've also been told that the 2003 diff's don't need additives for the anti-spin. Is this true?

Might search the 03 forum, it seems I heard about the factory not adding lube that will be needed if you plan on any hauling. They try to say they told ya to do it later when it's whining.

 

In order to ensure that you don't void your warranty, you MUST use the proper MOPAR endorsed rear gear lube.

As it contains a mixture of Fine Blue Indonesian Sheep wool (Rod at Wildcat is the sole supplier in the Western Hemisphere) and penguin blubber for the LS diff clutches, Scotty being the sole supplier, mixed with Narwhale oil, the price for this unique blend is somewhat high.

Better yet, if you're under warranty...........let the dealer put it in and pay for it.
It is supposed to be checked on the vehicle PDI.

 

I just don't have much faith in the dealership to get it right. So far the dealership's service department where I bought the truck has NOT impressed me. :

 

You can always dump it and refill with Synthetic.<br>Dodge recommends synthetic if you're planning on towing anyway.

 

Should it break in first?

 

I think the bearing break-in is different than the cylinder wall/ring break-in.<br>We avoid the synthetic swap in the engine because the rings scraping the cylinder walls is the break-in.

 

Use the Mopar stuff. It's not that expensive - $8-13 a quart if I remember right.

You DO NOT need aditives if you use the Mopar stuff and the Mopar stuff is synthetic.

They told me they checked mine during the PDI and when I checked it it was low. Had to wait a week for the stuff to come in (had to order it) and used almost the hole quart to get it to the bottom of the hole (which is slightly overfilled).

If I remember correctly, the spec is 1/2&quot; +/- 1/4&quot;. That means it can be 3/4&quot; below the hole. I like to run mine on the high side.

Is there anything wrong with over filling? I agree with you bout the service dept on the dealerships. Mine just plain sucks. Oh well. I'm moving to College Station in bout 2 months and if I need service, I'll take the short drive to Hempstead to have it serviced. I figure I bought it there, why not take it back there. I don't know if I'm allowed to mention the dealer name or not.

 

Add half a quart of snake oil. That'll keep the muffler bearings within tolerance.
