I haven't been out in a while, early summer, Black Bass out in the first leg off Dutch Slough to be specific, too busy with projects and been working 6 day weeks for the last few months. But here is Chris's Report from 11/19 out of Lauritzen's.
David and Lori have been fishing from Broad Slough to buoy 19 on the San Joaquin River this week. David and Lori were fishing with jumbo minnows for bait. They were using blue gill last weekend. The South end of West Island was slow on Saturday for them but the North side of the Island where it goes from 10–25 seemed to be a good place. David put the boat on a spot where the fish were stacked up. Once the bite turned off they headed over to the North side of Sherman Lake where they found a few more stripers stacked up and had a pretty good bite. To end the day, David and Lori ended up on the San Joaquin at buoy 19. David and Lori fished one of the current rips and ended up catching stripers in the 3–11 lb range. When they weren’t fishing with jumbo minnows they were fishing with worm tail jigs and had pretty good success. Dave and Lori thanks for the report.
Pat Jones reports that the past few weeks he and his brother Brian have been fishing the Franks Tract/Big Break area plugging with ¾ oz Rat-L-Traps (gold) and ½ oz Buck Tail Jigs (brown/orange) ranging in size of stripers from 15 inches to 13 lbs. It seems as though Pat has been doing the best at the bottom of the current for the best bite. When things have been a little slow on the bite he has thrown out his top water AC plug (white with a red head) and done very well. In some cases the stripers are just exploding at the bait at the surface of the water. Pat thanks for the report.
Tahirih and Paul Roa are great members of the West Delta Chapter of the California Striped Bass Association and live in Oakley. They have been making it a family event the past two weekends loading all of the kids in the boat for a Friday night sleep over and fishing trip in the Big Break area. Youngsters Julian Roa caught a 27 inch, 8.5 lb striper and Sherida Roa caught two 22 inch, 4 lb stripers on Saturday November 8th. All three fish were caught on shad.
Danny Cano and buddy Ted Lucero fished for stripers near buoy 11 on the San Joaquin River this past Saturday the 15th.They caught a total of three stripers with the biggest being 38 inches, 24 lbs. They were using shad for bait and caught it on the incoming current.
Most of us fisherman think bigger and faster is better. Nick Williams of Oakley went out fishing for stripers with Buddy Zack Sbranti in a very small aluminum boat fishing for stripers near buoy 8 on the Sacramento Deep Water Shipping Channel. Their bait of choice was shad. They ended up catching a 55 inch, 38 lb sturgeon much to their amazement.
Gary Moscatos, Sr., owner and captain of the 45 foot motor vessel Carolyn M, caught a 45.5 inch, 20 lb sturgeon using shad for bait while fishing for stripers.
As long as we continue to have good warm weather we will continue to have good fishing. The water temperature at the Antioch Boat Ramp is in the 59.6 – 60.66 degree range. It is a little cooler on the Sacramento River at the Rio Vista Bridge where the water temperature range is 58.3 – 58.9 degrees.
The barometric has been pretty constant so the fish are biting. There haven’t been any big spike either way.
The water is pretty clear, so whatever runoff we may have had weeks ago with the rain is long gone. However, there is lots of debris in the water so if you are boating at night be careful of junk in the water. See you on the water.
SBK again: Actually, I lied, I was out for Leopard Shark late July in Bolinas. I backed the truck into a stupid Oak tree branch while watching for a ditch on the side of Highway 1 in the passenger side mirror.
