Loser knows nothing about Nav systems..........please help
Im looking for a portable navigation system. I got to tell ya, when it comes to nuts and bolts im good! But when it comes to wiring, radios, amps......forget it, im a loser. There are so many out there i must admit im freakin lost. Im not interested in all the bells and whistles like live traffic updating, making phone calls or storing music. I just want something to give clear vioce directions with good readable maps.......I do like the voice to text addition I read about as well where it tells you the street names. oh yeah would like touchscreen also. Been looking online at the tomtom910 and the garmin nuvi 350? any suggestions from you guys? are these any good from your experiences? looking to stay around 500 bucks.
Thanks guys,
Tom

I use Street Atlas program for my laptop it runs about 100 bucks for the program Ive had great luck with it. If you dont have a laptop or arent interested in that type of application I would suggest any Garmin product. I personally have not used Garmin but the guys here at work love them
On my laptop I am running ALK technologys Co-Pilot live version 10. It has an RV mode.
Also have a Magellan Roadmate 2000. It is touch screen, and has voice commands, shows street names.
If you go on line the GPS store they have a lot of information and show several makes and models that are available.
Have fun, and don't get lost.

I like the nuvi lineup. I have a nuvi 660 which has the bigger screen and also brighter screen than some of their earlier units. It has things I thought were cool, but don't really use or need: Bluetooth connection to a cell phone, traffic receiver and a built in FM transmitter (which is very weak). I would seriously consider the nuvi 250W (if I was in the market for one now). It has the bigger, brighter screen but none of the basically useless stuff mentioned above. It has detailed US maps built in. The nuvi's are very easy to use. Just turn it on, and put in your destination and you are off. It doesn't get too much simpler. There are a few option menus, but they are easy to figure out and once set, you really don't need to touch them again.
A quick amazon.com search showed they have them going for about $450

I've got a Garmin Streetpilot C320 that works great. I just upgraded to the Edge A2 with TomTom and actually as far as street names and info, the Garmin is more detailed. If you are interested in the Garmin shoot me a PM, I'm considering selling it.
If you have a laptop and a GPS with an interface, get a copy of Topo USA from Delorme.com.
It does 3D so you can also see what the grade is and it's great for off-road use.
Microsoft also sells Mappoint but it doesn't do #D. It has an extensive database of points of interest like where all the Sonics are.
I just got an iPaq with an integrated GPS. They have a software package for it that does audio turn by turn directions. This is great for me because it's also does my email, is a browser and a phone and camera.
