I am with Monty on this one. Lots of better handguns out there than Glock, you see a great deal of them in service, but that is about who makes the lowest bid to the Department.

Whatever you buy, you do get what you pay for

 

If you are thinking about a tupperware pistol- take a real good look at the Springfield XD. The grip angle is more like a 1911. It has a trigger safety as well as a grip safety, but still is point and shoot like a Glock. I have seen them as low as $385 wholesale- don't let the price fool you. They are very well made, nice looking, and outstanding performers. I bought one (40 cal)on a whim and love it. Do a couple searches on it and read the reviews. It has been extremely well received.
Good luck- buying guns is more addictive than throwing money into these trucks

 

Another excellent brand is CZ. I have several of them and they are very accurate and high quality.

That is simply not true. The majority of law enforcement personel purchase their own weapons with their own money. That statement would apply to military though.

 

check out berretta. I bought a 92fs pre banned 15 round clip. about the same price as a glock. never had a problem except when I run out of rounds :- great for plunking little critters. also have a s/m44 & s/m357 both nickle. all are fun 8)

Are you sure about that? Maybe most AGENCY'S require private purchase, since most are small and don't have a budget. But the sizeable agency's that have the majority of personnell issue the gun. With the agency issueing the gun, they would be reducing liabilty by insuring consitancy with ammo use and training. They don't have to worry about the guy that want's to carry a bigger gun than everybody else shooting through 6 walls. Also, they can insure the officers are all trained equally for combat situations to insure the highest survivability. Even if the Dept doesn't care about their employees, it helps insurance and workmans comp and union issues.

Don't be swayed by the low cost of Glock.

I'm a firearms instructor and have owned an carryed numerous handguns throughout my 30 years in police work. I've evaluated numerious others.

Glocks work!

They are very simple weapons to operate. If your transitationing from a revolver to and automatic Glock makes it simple. NO decocking, NO Hammer, NO safety on/off. Just load it and shoot it. Don't get hung up on the NO safety. Your revolvers don't have a safety either.

I'm not giving lesson in firearms here so you should know how to safely load and carry a handgun.

Glocks are the one weapons I refer to as police proof. Officer even though they carry them for a living don't like to maintain them. I personally know of one officer that had a first generation glock 17 that was purchased when Glock first came out. This officer carryed the weapon we guessed for over 13 years an never cleaned it. Just oiled it prior to firearms training. After all this time the weapon began to malfunction. When I personally cleaned the weapon an noticed the condition an asked the officer about it and how dirty it was. They finally admitted to never cleaning it. The GLock weapon is still in service and proforming well.

I personally have pushed my Glocks on the range and fire over 6,000 round before cleaning, and never had a stoppage. Only cleaned it as I have to carry it on duty.

I don't recommend abusing any weapon as you never no when you will need it. But give me a low cost Glock any day.

My recommedation would be a Glock 9mm only because the ammo is cheap for what your wanting to do. If you don't mind the expense of the ammo the 40 caliber is a much better defense round.
