Just Quit Smoking

So Friday 10-2-09 I quit smoking, I'm now on day 12 without a cigarette and it sucks but it's not so bad. I REALLY miss and crave smoking but I need it to stick this time. I have 3 kiddo's and the older 2 are asking me all the time, "When are you going to quit?" So I told myself after hunting season I would quit.
So the carton of cigarettes went dry and I quit. I did the patch thing for about a week but they are almost as expensive as smokes so I just quit the patch and went cold turkey. My brain is spinning (literally if feels like it's spinning from the nicotine withdrawal) and I have little attention span and don't get on my bad side cause that's a fight I want to start...

I don't know where I'm going with this thread but I know I've read other posts like this and I'm bored and want to smoke.

I know this time I will quit because I want too, not for me but for my wife and kids.. Plus the truck smells much better inside and I just might save enough money without buying cigs that I can do more for the truck.

Let's see approx $150 a month on smokes equals ??? for the truck...

Great to hear this!!! I'll pray for a complete lack of desire for them.

I haven't ever smoked, due in part to an awareness that IF I ever did, I would be an addicted one to them, probably a chain smoker.

That said I have lots of friends who smoke, I don't look down on them, but I do hope they can quit. I really dislike seeing so many young people starting to smoke. Seems it's getting more popular - not less.

Way to go!!!

My motivation to quit was hearing that tobacco products make a guys tool more likely to just wobble when its supposed to be rigid.

Keep it up!!!

Thanks everyone for the support, I'm not old, but not a spring chicken either, 35 this year and I've smoked for 19 years about 2 packs a day everyday.
I'm now trying to figure how much money I've wasted on "trying to be cool" when I was 15, to now "I don't care what you think about me" I'm going to smoke if I want too.

Math, not fun when your head is spinning

I do see more people quiting then starting around here. Lucky for me I'm the only one in my family that "used" to smoke so there is no temptation or easy access for a quick fix.

I do hope spelling and grammar don't count on these type of posts. I know about post count not working here but I might be adding to this one quite a bit for the next week or so. Just to keep me honest with everyone.

Hey, bo, good deal.

I recently quit a 20+ year Copenhagen habit, this is the second time I have 'really quit', and I'm starting to feel it now. Probably on week three nicotine free.

Stay with it. I'm going to try to go to the doc and get some of that new fangled stuff... zyban? It's free for me.

I did the zyban thing about 3 years ago, did weird things to my heart so I quit it, funky pulse and blood pressure was weird. Not Dr confirmed but I and my wife felt it so I quit that.

Honestly, the only way I've been told that actually works is cold turkey. I wish there was a pill or something that would take away all the cravings but at the end of the day your mind is still telling you, you used to smoke/chew so why aren't you now. You used to light up every time you got in the truck or after every meal or before every barley pop...

Good luck, I'm in the same boat. It's a battle better fought and won that lost, so I'm fighting with my life.

I had a Skoal habit for about 20 years also. Quit 3 times and the third time was the charm. I have been tobacco free for almost 5 years now. Like you, I quit the third time because I wanted to. Made it much easier. Not to mention every time I had ANY type of sore or pain in my mouth or throat, my biggest fear of cancer was in my head until the problem went away! I feel a thousand times better now that I quit

So hang in there. For me the first month was the hardest but after that it slowly got easier. The worst part can be when you are around others that still do it.

That's it... times in the day when you always had one... that's my problem. More mental/habitual than anything.

Congrats on quiting, and best of luck with it. I quit smoking 2 years ago. I used Chantix to do it, it worked great for me. After 2 months I couldn't have cared less about smoking.

I am trying to quit too. Been pretty rough the last 1.5 weeks. Had a few cigars and 10 cigs in the last week and a half. from a pack + a day to hardly anything. I just need to taper off the rest and I will be golden. I know what ya mean about the kiddos on your tail. Both of my younger ones are riding me pretty hard to quit. My oldest (the Marine) smokes and dips so he is next after I quit!

CONGRATS AND KEEP IT UP!

Congrats on quitting, I've been quitting snuff for several years now, I'm an 11 year dipper and just recently quit and restarted (it sucks when someone close to you does it and you try to quit, because it's just right there) but after this can it's over again. Thing is I always get past the nicotine withdrawals easily, it's the habitual thing that I can't seem to kick, like after a good meal I want a dip, or when I'm cruising home from work at midnight, or after an ice cold beer. The worst though is when I'm working on a piece of equipment at the ranch and am concentrating on something hard that's when I "need" a dip the worst. Gum and sunflower seeds just don't quite have the same effect. Maybe 203 (jk I'm not sure how many times it is now) is the magic number.

But, but, WHO'S gonna pay for all the illegal immigrant kid's insurance if y'all quit smoking??!! You, know the CHIP insurance program, which is primarily funded by the increased tobacco/cigarette tax??

Seriously though, congrats and best wishes on quitting. Although I am serious about the statement above concerning the CHIP program too!!

I had quit cigarettes for about 20 years, smoking 4 packs a day, while driving 18 wheeler. Cigs back then were alot less too!! I said I would quit when they hit $1.00 a pack, ha ha!!

A VERY nasty divorce and hangin' round smokers got me back into it after 20 years BUT NOW they're almost $5.00 a pack!! Course I'm only doing about a pack-a-day now. I'll be joining you soon again, soon as my life gets a bit steadier. Yeah, I know, excuses, excuses.

However, one thing to look forward to - I never felt physically better than when I wasn't smoking. Gained some weight but then was able to work it back off. That's one of the major holdbacks for me now as I am older and metabolism isn't the same as when I was younger and did the long term quit.

Don't get discouraged if you gain weight, you'll have the energy to work it off without "coughing" your head off!!
