Re:just...

Thanks for the memory reawakening. Had an Uncle who owned one similar, but in red. I was knee high to a gnat when I learned the phrase "bat out of h-e-ll" from him while descending an ol' logging road with a heavy load of firewood in the back. He took that rig everywhere, mostly where roads didn't exist. One of your true off-roaders.

~Dave

A gin pole for me is a single pole, but have no idea where the word originated.
Makes me nostalgic. Can any of you 'old timers' out there remember the vacuum operated windshield wipers that quit on a long hill. In heavy rain if you wanted to see out you had to momentarily take your foot off the gas pedal so that the wipers could take a few swipes. Or back of a little and the wipers would come to life but be very slow.
Re:just...

Vacuum operated wipers, ah those were the days. Simple, reliable, and a manual over ride for those long steep climbs up the hills hoping the old girl don't get vapor lock while double clutching the non-synchronized gear box and hoping the vacuum assisted two speed will shift right, beating on the dash to get the heater motor to start again, asking for steering assistance from your co-driver to turn the non-power assisted three foot diameter steering wheel, and standing on the non-power assisted brakes with both feet while pulling against the steering wheel while going down the other side in Georgia overdrive. Whatever happened to simplicity?

And then there's the old B 61 shifting with one arm through the steering wheel on the main and the other on the aux splitter.

And then there's the old, ah, you get the picture. Gee, hope I haven't given away my age here.

Think I'll put some on my 99 truck.

DD4x4, how many folks could still drive like that I wonder. Most folks I work around can not split shift an Eaton too well. Double clutch to them means you must have an extra pedal. Oh well, its fun watching them.
Ed

Re:just...

I remember Dad's 28 Chebby. Seems like it was a weekly project, fixing the vaccum operated fuel pump. Traded the Chebby in on a 31 Dodge Brothers 4 dr sedan with a flat head six. A gas saving **** on the dash, "free-wheeling", pull the **** and it would disengage the tranny for coasting down hill. Also the simplified speed control, a pull out hand throttle which you could set, but not forget. And then there were the hydraulic brakes, innovative, Ferd coundn't firure that one out till 36.

Oh...Oh....Sister...Sister....ask me!...ask me! (hand raised waving wildly)

OK, "gin" is the aphetic, or shortened form of the word "engin" from the Latin word "ingenium" It's origins are from Old French (900-1400) and Middle English (1100-1500) languages meaning device or contrivance. Hence the word "cotten gin".

"Thomas, you get an A!"
