Joining the ARMY....maybe.

I am thinking of joining the Army. I want to join the Special Forces once my BCT is finished. And I know I can accoplish the task. I am 22 right now and in good shape (it will be great shape here in a few weeks) My younger brother is currently in the Army. I have good job in an office, but it is not where I want to be. I have been doing a lot of reading on what the Special Forces do, what is required to join and so on. My brother is coming back home from Germany in a few weeks before he goes out on another tour of duty in Iraq. And we're prolly gonna go and talk to a recruiter then.....depending on my decision.

Am I crazy? or am I gonna regret I didnt do this when I was 18?

Only a crazy person would ever consider you crazy. Rather, you are looking to join a special force and you might not have even thought of it that way. Just serving, whether in war time or peace entitles you to the greatest level of honor and respect you may ever know.

Your desire to serve is commendable. We need you and thank you and your brother.

Do it! I should have signed up back when I was 17 before I got in trouble. Special Forces was something I had always wanted to do but now it is not an option. I'll probably be stuck in an office for the rest of my life.

Whichever you decide, good luck and godspeed.
If you decide to serve, thank you for your service and come back safe.

Thank your brother for me as well.

22 is not too old at all. Perfect time to go in. I think you'll have the time of your life in the Army. You'll will learn a whole about yourself too.

You can also consider a guard unit for SF.

Good luck!

SF is not currently recruiting "from the street" They have plenty of guys who are Ranger and jump qualified to select from. That changes from day to day, though. That being said, join, in an MOS that applies to SF, do your job well, and get a few stripes. Once your second enlistment looms, you can see if you are really SF material. Opt for Airborne, no matter what, so you can go to the 82, the 173 or the 101. 101 is Airmobile, not fully Airborne, but there are a lot jumpers in the outfit.
If you mean it, you will get there.

If you are a single guy, GO FOR IT!

If you have any paternal or spousal responsibilities, think carefully.

I'm getting ready to separate from the Air Force after being in 13 years. I'm thankful for the tremendous experience and opportunities I've had in that time.

When I got married, I had to consider interests other than my own. In the interests family of stability and non-financial prosperity, I'm separating. The current situation in the AF is not sustainable, imo.

I recommend joining the Army. The AF and Navy used to be the place to be, but they are getting cut severely to try and raise money for the Army.

Serving in the military can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and there's no greater country to serve!!

I agree with everyone else. 22yrs. old Is anything but old. I think it would most likely be an advantage to you while in the military to be honest. A little more wiser. I say there is no time like the present.

Currently in Ft. Hood and we had a mechanic just come back fro SF Selection Course. He made it to the second to last day and said no more. After that he still had to do the Q-Course. He let me know some of the stuff he did and it is plan nuts. 12 Mile-Ruck, 9 Mile Runs, 10 Hr Navigation Course, Sand Log PT. That was back to back in one day. Amounts get higher as you go farther. Give you props if you go, but be ready. You can go in as an 18X (Special Forces), but if you don't pass SF courses will be an 11B(Grunt) Best is to pick a trade and get Airborne qualified then go to SF recruiting to try out. This gives you something to fall back on. Same guy said plenty of Rangers there also that didn't make the cut. Good Luck

When you talk to that recruiter tell him that EOD is the only job you'll take. I'm a little biased, but I promise that someday you'll be thanking me.

Heck, why go Army if you want to do EOD? You can get big bucks as an EOD contractor in the theater. www.eodt.com

They're hiring, and pay VERY well.

The saying "If you're not smart you had better be tough" applies when think about a career choice in the Army.

I was a grunt (11B) for 6 years, then switched over to 52D. Get a good skill first, then try out for SF.

I went through boot camp at Harmony Church (Ft. Benning), great place to visit in the summer months. I'm not sure if they still house trainees there anymore? If you do go 11B, hope that you get Sand Hilton, they had AC..

SF is something that requires TREMENDOUS commitment, but well worth it if you succeed. As it has already been said here, not everyone makes it and for a multitude of reasons.

If you have any questions and want to talk feel free to call me, I can give you an idea what to expect having spent over 20 years SF myself.

Ok OK I will probaly get hated for saying this and so be it. Yes I joined the army I was 21. I loved it! Probaly the best move I have ever made! The thing is everybody up talkes sf, rangers, force recon. Thats fine if your planning on staying for 20 plus years and want to retire and never have to do anything else again. I choose an mos that when I got out I had a good paying job and do what I want to do. I went 55d which is eod ( bomb squad) When I got out I had a job waiting on me making well over 85k a year. SF is a great bragging right but what are you going to do down the road? Are you going to snap your leg on your first jump and get a medical out? Things to think about before joining. If you would like drop me an email and if you want I will give you my number and talk to you about stuff the recruiters wont tell you. things to know before you put your name on paper. I will not talk you out of joining but give you information of what to look forward to and how to get the most out of the military. AKA school money and also sign on bonuses. Good luck in all you do....Shawn
