You just end up with some pretty savory flavors when used properly.

per Julia Childs, the alcohol cooks off at 120* for 2-3 minutes......wine or beer......sumtine like that, she had been at the sherry when she said it( yes I used to watch "Cooking with Julia".. what of it?)
Hoss... good stand imho,
...when you are pre-boiling your brats in beer / mustard / kraut, whatever - throw in a couple of hot chili peppers (the yellow ones, sliced open) - adds a smoky kick, really gotta try it....

I wasn't expecting to get drunk from eating them.

I have a friend who makes an AWESOME fertilizer for his yard and one of the main ingredients is cheap beer. As much as I'd like to use that fertilizer (his yard looks great), I don't for the same reason mentioned above. The beer companies make plenty of money without my help.

Part of the reason they drank "wine" back then was to help settle their stomachs. Remember, they didn't have water treatment plants back then like we do today.
Not really a discussion I care to get into, but I just wanted to point that out.

Now...back to brats....I sure do love me some Johnsonville Beef Brats.
only dark grape juce not white! The german in me is crying at the thought of a bratwurst being eaten without a beer bath and sourcrout and NO DARK BEER?????
Just kidding. You shold try the spicy ones if that's your thing. I like those the best.
As for mustard go with some spicy stone ground brown musteard...
I'm gonna grill some tonight, you guys gave me a craving.

It's ok Pantera .... I filled in for ya today and ate a huge portion of Hefeweisen soaked bratwurst with sourkraut und spaetzle !!!
With a couple 1/2 pints of Dunkle Hefeweisen to wash it down properly.
The afternoon flew right by after that !!
Hoss ... what about buying alchohol free beer ?? At least you would still have some flavor to marinade with.

But, to answer your question, I don't really want anything to do with ANY kind of beer...including root beer (not that I think there's anything wrong with root beer....except for the fact that it is absolutely the nastiest tasting beverage known to man).
i have a freezer full of buffalo, elk, deer and hog......I sure hope I have at least one package of sausage links in there from one of them...if not then I will be going to store tonight for some brats....
spicy brats with spicy brown mustard........I like to enjoy mine the entire weekend.
