The SRT-10 is merely a concept car. I predict they will release a 6.4L 500+hp Hemi next year, hopefully with the Shaker hood. It's the 40th anniversary of the Challenger in 2010 so that would be a good time to step it up.
Regarding the new vs the 70's cars, the new ones are much quicker, faster, handle a LOT better, stop way better, and do all this will all the creature comforts for less than a 10th of what an original Hemi Challenger is now worth. Also they are less likely to rust out since the new cars are dipped in zinc chromate during production. The old ones rust out in a few years unless you keep them indoors and never drive them in the rain (much less snow), which is a big part of why there are so few left today.
No, finally, after enduring the late `70's through the early `00's cars, I can finally get excited about a new Mopar performance car. Good thing too - I'm tired of constantly working on the old ones.

I bet it would beat one if the old Hemi is stock. It doesn't take much to make that old Hemi scream though. I love the old Hemis but I know my 68 RR 440 spanked plenty of them at the track when I used to drag race. I didn't even build my 440s like most guys did either. I was on a low budget high performance budget.... (I did not beat every Hemi I raced. The everyday Joe Blow with a Hemi car at the track obviously didn't know how to build one properly... )
Anyways, I think that new Challenger is sweet but the one I saw here in town had the sunroof in it and I just think that a Challenger should not have this. It just looked wrong.
If anybody wants to give me an old one or a new one I will not complain....
I had a Plum Crazy 70 R/T Challenger 440 that I got tired of and sold for $6000 about 12 years ago. That car was really really nice and highly optioned. If only I knew what the value would be today............

Well, I restored Mopar muscle cars and drag raced (brackets mostly) for around 25 years. I haven't been in a new Challenger yet (although I plan to buy one in 2010...), but Motor Trend tested the `08 and ran consistant 13.1's with a best of 13.06. No original street Mopar muscle car ever ran that good right out of the box. Keep in mind, the 2008 was only available with 3.06 gears and open differential, with an auto trans. For 2009 it's available with the 6 speed manual and 3.92 posi., which should shave at least half a second off the ET if not more. All this with the standard 6.1L SRT engine. With the much more powerful 6.4L engine, who knows...
Edit to add: I won't be ordering a sunroof in my Challenger either - it just ain't right.
