Question I don't get it (Service Acadmey grads going into pro sports)

The subject of this article on CNN.com Click Here went to the United States Military Academy (aka West Point) and was drafted to play pro football. He wants to "pursue that dream". Um, when you are accepted into any service academy (West Point, Annapolis, Air Force Academy) you go on a "free" ride. You know that upon graduation, you are commissioned as an officer and owe the military 5 years of service. Seems fair and not a surprise. Why is there even any discussion about grads not having to fulfill their 5 year obligation?

??

Keep 'em there and away from us.
From what I am seeing in the quality of what's coming out of the academies, the military would be better off taking a good First Class Petty Officer or SFC/Gunny and pinning a bar on them. At least you would have someone that knows who to go to to get the job done and also knows how to handle troops.
We've got a ring knocker that left the Army as a Major, LTC now, due to "hardship". Probably panties knotted 'cause of possible deployment. You can't tell him anything. His attitude toward enlisted personnel is that the only thing they are good for is to fight, f****cate(have illicit relations with any female), and get drunk. His attitude may cost him his career and some time in Kansas due to the fact that his decision NOT to listen to enlisted subject matter experts may cost us $15,000,000+ to replace equipment and or
components "someone" decided to ship to other places. A lot of stinky stuff is about to hit the fan and get slung a long ways. My guys and I are covered. When we did the technical inspections and closed the equipment up, I had them place serial numbered stainless steel cable seals on the equipment and record the seal serial number on all documentation before custody transfer. Another TI was done last week. Where did the seals go and where is the stuff that's supposed to be inside?

Don't they sign a contract when entering West Point, or the Naval Academy? Keith

I don't deal with politics, incompetence, and stupid very well. I have several dogtags hanging from my dresser mirror that reminds me every morning of what happens when you have a combination of two or more.
IMO, if anyone in the armed services gets out of their obligation in order to play professional sports, they should have to pay back every dime that was spent on educating/training them. Almost forgot, officers get educated, enlisted get trained.
There is no place in the service for anyone that is not 100% committed to their job/mission. Too much $$$$ and too many lives may very well be depending on the decision that the kid in the corner picking his nose will be making. Hope he doesn't catch a hair with his fingernail, he might do a 20 round fire for effect when he pulls it and says "SHOOT!!!!"

and here I thought this was gonna be a rather tame topic !!

Bruce ... you're my hero !!

So these knuckleheads can't cut the mustard in the military so they send em out to play instead . Whatever .... money wasted but lives saved.

Cheers,
PISTOL

Did they change the rules?
Used to be that they had to complete their commitment.
Roger Staubach (Navy) comes to mind.
He served his 4 years (I think it was 4 then) and then went to play for Dallas.

David Robinson gradutated Annapolis, did his stint (hard to imagine 7'1" traversing the corridors of a naval ship) then went to win championships with San Antonio. Same with Roger as mentioned above. It can be done. This kid needs to quit whining and fulfill his obligation.

There's a GOOD reason that they keep Bruce (shortround) confined to either a dark enclosed Bat Cave or the middle of the desert..........

I'm starting to wonder if he's really this guy.

PS: I agree with him completely.
