So I am going to post this and ask that you guys find the answer and PLEASE tell me how you got it so I don't look like a moron when I try to tell my kids how to do this thing!!

Here is the question....

At lunch, 50 children bought either chocolate or white milk. Chocolate milk costs $0.30 and white milk costs $0.25. The total cost of the milk sold was $13.30. How many chocolate milks and white milks were sold?
I'm posting this without reading the other replies-- just so ya know I'm not cheating

If the white milk costs .25, then the total cost for white milk is number of milks times .25. Let's write this is 0.25W. Likewise, chocolate milk is .30C, or just .3C.

So the total dollar value formula looks like this: .3C +.25W= 13.30

We need another equation so that we can isolate a variable. We know that 50 kids bought milk, so the second equation is C+W=50.

Let's express W as "50-C" W=50-C

So now we have:

.3C+ .25(50-C)=13.30

Distributive property gives us:

.3C+ 12.5-.25C=13.30

.05C= (13.30-12.5)

.05C= .80

C= 16

So we have 16 Chocolate milks. Given 50 kids, that means 34 white milks.

We can add it up and check:

(16x0.30)+(34*0.25)

4.8+8.5= $13.30

Problem solved.

I only charge $50/hr to tutor-- $30 via email

Where is TROOPERTHORN when you need him?

Trooper in a math teacher. He should be able to come up with the easy and best way to solve this one.

He might be out washing the dragon or something haven't seen him for a few days.
