3RD Grade math

Maybe I'm stupid but my daughter came home from school today with this math problem.
I thought the answer was C.9
but that means I have 24 ribbons in all?
Does not make since to me.
I think they have it worded wrong.

yeah the question is wrong, it would have to be an even number for the total.

Blue ribbons + yellow ribbons = 15 ribbons
X+(X+6)= 15
2X+ 6=15
2X=9
X=4.5

They didn't give you a correct answer in the choices. They also didn't think out that problem before hand for a 3rd grader. Perhaps a bit early for algebra and decimals combined....

Unless I'm wrong as well. And that is possible.

I agree with everything ofcmarc said. He is correct. A little too advanced for a third grader and they didn't give the correct answer as an option.

the question is either worded incorrectly or the correct answer(4.5) is not given... as written, this is a problem of 2 equations and one unknown and seems a bit advanced for a standard 3rd grade math class...

The question presumably should read:
Robyn has 6 more blue ribbons than yellow ribbons. If she has 15 blue ribbons, how may yellow ribbons does she have?

I think you guys are over thinking this. My interpretation of the question is that she has 6 blue ribbons out of a total of 15 ribbons, how many yellow ribbons does she have. The answer is- C. 9.

Are we smarter than a 3rg grader?

I see your math and would agree with it, "if" there were a disclaimer on the top of the page stating, "pick the most correct answer". I know things have changed since I have been in school, but as you previously stated, it is a little early for algebra and decimal points, (which I agree with you).

Tell her to go to school and tell the teacher she isn't going to do her homework if the teacher isn't gonna do theirs.

Time for a teacher parent conference. Shameful on the teachers part.

Good luck,

Tim
