Hydro on JD Mower Overheating/Slowing, any ideas?

I've got a 1997 JD LX279 17hp hydro mower.

The hydro lately has been acting slower after mowing for about 1/2 hr, and lastnight I noticed it puked oil out the fill tube for the first time. I put my hand on the gearbox and it was pretty hot to the touch, I noticed I almost lost reverse also, I stopped mowing, let it all cool down for an hour and washed everything down. After that, everything was back fine again, forward, reverse etc...

I had the JD dealer change the fluid in the rear for preventative maint about 4 years ago, its been changed another 2 times prior. I'm easy on it, level yard, slow mowing.

Do you think the transmission going out, fluid bad? or something else?

I don't know but if it's been 4 years since the last fluid change you might want to consider that along with a filter, if it's so equipped. Maybe you'll get lucky.
