Shaking when slowing. Help please!!

My truck started shaking when I am slowing down to stop. I am pretty sure its coming from the rear of the truck. It only starts it at about 30 mph and does it until I get stopped. It feels like I am driving over rumble strips. I thought maybe it was the rotors that needed to be turned. So I had that done yesterday, and it still does it. Anyone else have this problem? Its a 03 Dually. Now I am starting to think its something inside the rear. Any help is appreciated.

Carrier bearing maybe? Or you SURE it is coming from the rear? If not, could be the FRONT rotors. Also things to look at:

Wheel bearings
Track bar (4wd??)
Hub bearings (4wd??)

Could also be the tires

Mine did that when it needed some new u-joints in the rear.. Only did it when slowing. Probably would have done it at other times if I would have let it go a little longer.

Check your universals.

U-Joints will be the problem I bet. change them all. they suck on these trucks. Also I had to teach the guys at the auto store which were the right ones that fit. Chrysler ones are extremely expensive and are not greasable. I had to buy one from them to get my truck going till the parts store got the right ones in.

I agree with the other guys, check the U-joints. My 05 started shaking bad, so I posted a question here on this site and the feedback was spot on. Crawl under the truck and touch the U-joints after driving a bit. If warm/hot, they are bad. My truck is still under warranty, so I had them change it out. Yes, it is still the same replacement part, but they are paying for them for now. I will definately change them to a better Zerk-type in the future.

Good luck.

Mine did the same thing and it was the rear U-joint. There wasn't much play in it at all but when we pulled it out it fell apart in my hands. Definately use a greasable type on the replacement

My 05 did the same twice now, once for the center and once for the rear dif end. There was no play to be found, but when I removed the drive shaft the u-joint was frozen in one angle.

My truck starts feeling like I am driving over rumble strips when I reach 25 mph and stops when I get to 35 mph. At all other speeds, everything is smooth as silk. It also does this when slowing down to 35mph and all the way until I reach 25 mph then smooths out under 25 mph. My front drive shaft and front u joints are new. I thought the vibration was coming from the front, but it is hard to tell on something like that. I even replaced the front tires the other day and had them balanced cause I thought it was coming from the front. Maybe I need to start checking rear u joints instead. What do you guys think?

Also, if I find out that it is u joints, can I buy them on-line or can I get them at NAPA Auto Parts? Hey Racing41, let me know what you find cause we have the same trucks. Gary

Get a high quality Spicer U-joint. No they don't have grease fittings but they don't because the hole for the zerk fitting is a weak point. Great U-Joints and I have used many on different vehicles.

My truck did the same as you were describing. At first I thought the clutch wasn't disengaging all the way because of the way it shook. It felt like it was under my seat almost at first. As it got worse it was obvious that it was in the rear.

You can get a greasable Spicer unit, that's what I put it my truck. I've always used these in my Jeeps and other vehicles with good results.

Yes, it will get worse as it wears out more. My rear u-joint was so bad it only had needles in one of the caps

Why does it only start at one speed and continue till stopped? Why wouldnt it do it everytime the driveshaft rotates?

My 05 took NAPA u-joint 233-0188, it is greasable and no problems with it yet.
