How to tell if you have a warped rotor

2001 Silverado, had new brakes about 2 years ago, has about 25k on the brakes, has a shake if you brake hard, I was going to take the brake apart thinking one of the rotors is warped, but how can I tell if the rotor is warped once I have it apart. Any help would be great.

Well you can look for spots of discoloration and grinding, you can usually tell once you get a good look at it. You can also spin the rotor with the caliper still on and you most likely will feel it catch more off and on.

just as rip said, spin the rotor and feel for a spot that it gets tight. if its not warped bad you can just get them cut which just about everyshop is able to do. good luck with it

Brake pedal pulsation while braking is warped rotors. Don't waist your time turning them, you can put new one's on for $40-60 bucks each. Look at the rotor through the wheel, is there any pitting spots on them?

If it has rear disk breaks don't overlook them. If you feel it in your foot or you feel it in your body, then the backs are most likely the issue because they grab first until enough pressure has built up and then the fronts apply pressure.…, if its pulling or your steering wheel has a shimmy then look more at the fronts. At the rate scrap steel is being used for just about everything it’s getting weak. Do a search on brake rotor delamination; you’ll see what I mean. GM had a real problem there for a while. I just replaced calipers, pads and rotors on the front 2 weeks ago and today picked up rotors, pads and e-brake shoes for my Dodge. If you start replacing things don’t skimp or go cheap…you’ll regret it! Good luck and almost forgot, use a good lube on all the slides and contact points even if your not replacing stuff, you’ll be in there so it will be worth it!

my wife usually warps a rotor everytime she drives thru the mountains. she will ride her brakes down the hills and get them nice and hot then stop somewhere and hold her foot on the brakes for a while keeping one spot hot while the rest cools.
