Guys, the suggestion to shoot the ref was intended as an attempt at caveman era humor. Gary Larson got a way with a lot worse in the Far Side cartoon.
Excitement/elation at victory should not be misconstrued as taunting in this situation. Calling back a clean play is ludicrous!
A 10 yard penalty on kick off would have been an appropriate warning if it was the first offense.
Anyone agree with this?

The kid learned a valuable lesson. Life is not fair, something he will definitely not learn in the classroom.

No. In fact, I'm going to run away with scissors!

Don't have to explain anything to me. I didn't the the shooting comment seriously, just corrected the fact it wasn't me who said it. I can decipher those words used for imagery or exaggeration or whatever they are..those words with meanings I confuse.
As for the opinion on what the penalty should result in, good question. Since excessive celebration penalties are charged on the ensuing kickoff, that's where this one should have been put. Not on par with an offensive holding or interference. There was no physical interference with a defensive player so the play should stand. Penalize the kickoff.
I think the issue with this particular game is that the penalty occurred before the player reached the end zone, therefore the play was null. Had the so called excessive celebration occurred after the player got the touchdown, I believe they would have enforced the penalty after the kickoff.
Last night my son had a soccer game. He took a shot, and scored a goal. At least thats what WE thought. Ref said the ball didn't pass the goal line before it was booted out by the goalie.
While I disagreed with the ref's call, I made it a point after the game to show my son that even though I may disagree with the ref, he runs the game. Not all calls go your way or are fair.
Thats life.
Same with the football team. Not all calls go your way, fair or not.

The issue was it was a bad call. And don't get me started on bad soccer refs. Still unhappy about the exceptionally bad crew we had our game before Thanksgiving. When you have good refs it shows. It doesn't mean every call goes your way. It means the ref is communicating with players on the field and showing discretion. Earlier in the season we had a game with a very good ref. He talked to players during plays, showed restraint, gave warnings and let the teams play.
I know life's not fair. I'm a great lifelong athlete if I say so myself. But I had manificent accident and lost use of my left arm. You think I don't know life isn't fair?
You fix the things that can be controlled and you make life as fair as possible because it is unfair enough.
watched the clip on 'youtube' to get a sense of action for the call...
qb was 20 yards away from the goal line. if that rule was put into the league, then that was a play a ref COULD call.....experience is key to any ruling.
Think the ref found a play matched to a new rule......
hate when watching any game (pee wee, high school, pro) and the officials take the game away from the players.....because they are told the level of what infractions the league will not tolerate.
best refs (i was an umpire) love the game, respect the athletes, and set the tone by communication (just what Shorts described).
this guy was just following a new rule. he be excoriated (roasted) if he didn't....
seriously agree that coaches must instill pride with discipline.....
competitive sports are the next best lesson for young men than the military....

As far as the soccer game; my son is 10. The ref is in high school. So, there is a lot of slack all around because she was still learning how to be a ref.
When we have an adult ref, he does as you spoke of. Calls the foul, stops play and teaches the kids what they did wrong in a calm, teaching demeanor. Does he miss some calls? Absolutely. But it's a learning experience for the kids.
Thats whats important to me and what I think is important for my son to take away from all of it.
Play hard, win some, lose some. Some great calls, some not so great. Sportsmanship is, to me, above all, the most important part of the game.
Never forget; it's just a game.

Don't go away thinking I'm unsportsmanlike and undisciplined. You'd be wrong.
BTW, we don't disagree. You've been explaining the lessons being taken away which I agree with. I'm talking about the ref and call that comes before the lesson.

My statetment was to your indication that the ref made a bad call. I disagree and believe he made the right call.
I can see the other side of it, but again, respectfully disagree.
Either way, the kids learned a valuable lesson that day.

This was just kinda funny to me. We use an older umpire in our baseball league for our games and he is loved/hated by the league members 50/50. His strike zone resembles that oscillating thing the Enterprise faced on one of its episodes and we kid him about it. He's a good egg by me and he takes it well by challenging me to have his eyesight when I am in my 70's. I usually reply, "Don, I'm over here".
Last year he missed two pick offs at first base while he was jawing with the wives between pitches. His argument was that they were easier to watch than our game!! He should be shot after saying that!
Anyway, my final thought is a lot of these guys are trying to do the best job they can and give 100% all the time and deserve much more respect than they ever receive and only have one view of the play, compared to a thousand eyes in the stands and sidelines that all saw it a bit differently.
If you ref/ump/officiate any sports, Thanks, those of us that enjoy playing really appreciate it!!
